About The Position

Provide enterprise-wide leadership and oversight for all U.S. state and local tax matters. Ensure compliance, manage risk, and drive proactive planning across state income, sales & use, city business, and property taxes, while aligning tax strategy with overall corporate objectives.

Requirements

  • 12+ years of state and local tax experience, with leadership responsibility across multiple tax types.
  • Deep technical knowledge of state income, sales & use, city, and property taxes.
  • Strong ASC 740 & ASC 450 technical expertise.
  • Proven ability to manage audits and controversy at state and local levels.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • CPA, JD, or MST strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Direct preparation, review, and filing of all state income and franchise tax returns.
  • Oversee ASC 740 state income tax provisions for quarterly and annual reporting.
  • Manage state-level audits, appeals, and controversy resolution.
  • Develop planning strategies to optimize state effective tax rates.
  • Ensure accurate compliance for sales and use taxes across all jurisdictions.
  • Guide business units on the taxability of products/services and exemption management.
  • Oversee indirect tax systems and processes (e.g., sales tax systems, automation tools, exemption certificates).
  • Lead defense and resolution of sales tax audits.
  • Oversee ASC 450 sales tax reserve requirements for quarterly and annual reporting.
  • Monitor and manage compliance with city-level business license, gross receipts, and local income taxes.
  • Coordinate with Legal and Real Estate teams on requirements for new offices, facilities, or expansions.
  • Advise business leaders on emerging municipal tax risks and developments.
  • Oversee ASC 450 city tax reserve requirements for quarterly and annual reporting.
  • Oversee timely and accurate property tax filings and payments.
  • Manage valuation disputes and appeals to reduce exposure and optimize assessments.
  • Partner with Finance and Real Estate teams to track fixed asset and property portfolios.
  • Oversee ASC 450 property tax reserve requirements for quarterly and annual reporting.
  • Develop and communicate the company's overall SALT strategy to leadership.
  • Partner with Finance, Legal, Real Estate, Sales, and Operations to align tax compliance with business activities.
  • Advise on SALT implications of mergers, acquisitions, supply chain changes, and product launches.
  • Maintain relationships with external advisors and state/local tax authorities.
  • Build and lead a high-performing SALT team with clear accountability.
  • Implement effective processes, internal controls, and automation to ensure accuracy and efficiency.
  • Proactively communicate risks, audit developments, and opportunities to executive leadership.
  • Establish a governance framework for SALT compliance across the enterprise.
  • Deliver timely and accurate SALT compliance in all relevant jurisdictions.
  • Ensure transparent ASC 740 reporting of state and local tax positions.
  • Ensure transparent ASC 450 reporting for sales, city, and property taxes.
  • Efficient audit defense and controversy resolution.
  • Develop tax planning initiatives that optimize cash flow and minimize risk.
  • Develop internal SALT talent and capabilities.
