About The Position

This position manages the Patrol Division and supervises three full-time Campus Security Officers and 20+ student patrol officers. This position oversees mid-shift dispatch operations and personnel. Provides advanced professional supervisory organization and administrative recommendations. Provides broad-based technology leadership, expertise, and management for the University Security Department at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Primary components of the position include: project management to security initiatives such as card access and camera system, oversight of department technology and information infrastructure (hardware, software, networks, data, applications, PCs, computer peripherals and other equipment. Provides technical management to the department; is a systems administrator for the campus Lenel Access Control System, video camera system, and communications center to include the ARMER radio equipment/software. Provides security program and management analysis to the department in all areas identified in this document. Serves on the Physical Security Committee that oversees the University card access and video camera system. This position has been designated as weather and emergency essential. In the event of a short-term University closure or emergency event, incumbent is required to report to work and respond as requested. Requirements

  • A minimum of (2) years of experience in a security office, as Community Service Officer, or as a Peace Officer.A Bachelors degree in Law Enforcement or a related field may substitute for 1 year of experience.
  • Upon selection as a finalist, pass a background check free from criminal convictions or other trust violations.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of employee supervision.
  • Knowledge of organization, controls and techniques used in dealing with procedural and management problems.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Good communication and human relation skills are essential for interviewing witnesses, victims, suspects; defusing conflicts and violent situations.These skills are also essential for providing effective leadership to staff.Good communication is essential for writing reports, recommending modifications to emergency procedures and policies, and writing policies and procedures.
  • Hearing - normal or corrected to normal;
  • Eyesight 20/20 or corrected to 20/20 with normal color vision;
  • On an 8 hour shift be able to:maintain a stationary position for long periods of time, and/or move for long periods of time;
  • Able to negotiate slippery/wet/uneven surfaces;
  • Able to perform physically demanding tasks when necessary:bend/stoop, crouch, kneel, balance, push/pull, occasionally squat, crawl, climb, reach above shoulder level; use both feet for repetitive movements; use hands for grasping and fine manipulating; ability to manually direct traffic;
  • Able to communicate using a two-way radio;
  • Ability to drive an automobile or truck in all types of weather and at any time of day;
  • Ability to defend against aggressive/combative individuals;
  • Ability to identify smoke and common hazardous materials by sense of smell;
