Works independently to perform digital and 3D screening and diagnostic mammography and may also include wire and wire-free localizations, stereotactic breast biopsies, and DEXA imaging based on hospital policies and/or practice standards, under the supervision of the interpreting physician. Must demonstrate an understanding of breast anatomy, physiology, pathology, and medical terminology. Must maintain accuracy in breast positioning, exposure techniques, and image evaluation while adhering to radiation protection and safety standards. Must understand the federal regulations governing mammography practice to meet the standards for the performance of breast imaging. Must have knowledge of the quality assurance policies and quality control testing for mammography within federal regulation guidelines. Must prepare and set up medical supplies using aseptic techniques for stereotactic biopsies and wire needle localizations and explain procedures to patients.

  • Review orders prior to day of procedure to ensure accuracy and to avoid delay in patient care, and maintain, generate, and keep organized documentation for all upcoming biopsies and localizations.
  • Provide excellent patient care by educating and preparing patients for their procedure while utilizing effective communication.
  • Obtain and document accurate patient medical history to assist radiologist’s interpretation.
  • Ensure patient comfort and safety for the duration of their procedure by positioning and instructing patient while utilizing protective shielding, immobilization, and supportive devices as required.
  • Perform and complete procedures as required by physician’s order in hospital information system.
  • Perform screening and diagnostic mammograms and Dexa imaging at applicable locations.
  • Cleaning and maintaining all imaging equipment; selecting proper exposure factors of radiographic equipment for each examination.
  • Perform daily and weekly Quality Control tests on radiologist’s workstations, mammography machine, and Stereotactic equipment.
  • Request, upload, and prepare patients outside mammograms when necessary for comparison of the Radiologist’s dictation.
  • Enter an order for Breast Ultrasound when required by the Radiologist and communicate with the sonographers.
  • Perform stereotactic biopsies and wire needle localizations.
  • Assisting Breast surgeon/radiologist throughout the procedure.
  • Assist with MRI guided breast biopsies as needed.
  • Place supply orders for procedures and maintain an adequate PAR level.
  • Complete post procedure documentation including entering specimen orders.
  • Complete Biopsy Quality Control before every procedure
  • Gather all required documentation for the procedure including consent, outside reports and images, and uploading outside images to PACS.
  • Imaging technologists are required to cover all outpatient and hospital locations as necessary and appropriate and may also assist with mentoring and/or training students, and new hires.

  • Associate degree from a Radiologic Technology program.
  • Minimum one (1) year Mammography experience preferred.
  • ARRT(M) certified or registry eligible (If eligible, must become ARRT(M) certified within 24 months of hire or transfer date)
  • South Carolina Radiation Quality Standards Association certified required.
  • American Heart Association Healthcare provider course with Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required to be initially completed with the TH Organizational Development Office within 30 calendar days of hire date (exceptions to obtain certification from a provider other than the TH Organizational Development Office are approved by TH Organizational development on a case-by-case basis).
