About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Medical Imaging Director, the mammography/DEXA Technologist performs all general radiography examinations, evaluates images for technical quality, verify in PACS, completes work in RIS and is able to answer patient, technologist and radiologist questions. Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information. This list of duties and responsibilities is illustrative only of the tasks performed by this position and is not all-inclusive.

Requirements

  • Must have an extensive knowledge of breast pathology and mammographic signs of pathology.
  • Must have Knowledge of all mammographic positions and the ability to radiographically record the required information.
  • Must have a successful completion of a formal radiologic technology training program, which meets the requirements for registry by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
  • Must have a current ARRT(R); AZ(CRT); ARRT (M); and MRTBE-CMT are required.
  • Must have one (1) year minimum recent (within last 12 months) acute care/hospital experience.
  • Must have an American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers and must have a current CPR.
  • Identify and assist in developing and reviewing patient education material.
  • Assist with the training and orientation of other technologists as well as students, medical students, residents, fellows, and nursing students.
  • Ability to operate equipment utilizing a variety of possibly techniques.
  • Ability to adjust equipment/machines settings to obtain optimal diagnostic results.
  • Ability to perform examinations, recognizing the significance of all structures that are visualized, differentiating artifacts from appropriate images, while recognizing the limitations of equipment and utilizing knowledge of anatomy and physiology.
  • Ability to educate patients and families of safe and appropriate testing; thoroughly explaining procedures, answering questions, and calming concerns.
  • Ability to make knowledgeable clinical assessments and judgements.
  • Ability to use and apply clinical research findings to identify various intervention techniques or procedures that may need modification.
  • Ability to maintain composure under stress, using tact and good judgment.
  • Demonstrate analytical decision-making skills; ability to quickly assess and resolve technical and patient care problems.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a care team member.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of medical records.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Ability to interact professionally and develop effective relationships.
  • Ability to comply with all HIPAA requirements.
  • Basic computer skills (ability to navigate the computer, internet, and keyboarding skills).
  • Excellent verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Explain procedures and educate patients about the role of regular mammography in preventive breast health
  • Conduct daily, weekly and monthly QC testing to ensure the quality control functions related to mammography
  • Processes and archives images in accordance with established procedures
  • May be required to perform multi-modality exams (DEXA, X-rays) depending on the site-specific requirements
  • Perform Screening and Diagnostic Mammogram procedures
  • Perform stereotactic, needle localizations or Bone Density (DXA) examinations
  • Maintains X-ray and other equipment in efficient operating order
  • Obtains patient history, answers patient questions, and explains procedures
  • Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams, in meetings and on committees
  • Performs patient follow-up as required by MQSA/ACR standards
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
