About The Position

Under direction and consultation from the Makerspace Coordinator, the Makerspace Outreach Specialist (MOS) will strengthen the Wyrkshop’s ties to the Laramie community and Front Range through educational programming, outreach activities, special events, social media, and public awareness campaigns. The MOS will assist the Makerspace Coordinator with academic and community outreach, with a focus on development of events and programs necessary to increase Wyrkshop’s regional footprint and community engagement. The MOS will be responsible for maintaining public relations with regional school districts, encouraging Wyrkshop participation with these K-12 organizations, scheduling tours, and developing programs, classes and events catered to these institutions. Likewise, the MOS will develop events, awareness campaigns, and programs catered to the Laramie and Rocky Mountain public communities, as overseen by the Makerspace Coordinator.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate creative problem-solving instincts and ability to quickly learn and utilize non-traditional tools. Have an interest in or experience with makerspace hardware and software.
  • Interact, assist, and engage effectively and positively with a diverse population of educators, UW students, faculty, staff, and members of the Laramie community.
  • Remain positive, enthusiastic, flexible, and upbeat in the face of challenges.
  • Provide service to the UW community by answering questions, assisting visitors and users with projects and questions, providing troubleshooting, and promoting Wyrkshop resources.
  • Have an interest in or demonstrated ability to provide small group instruction, orientation, workshops, and tutorials. Makerspace Outreach Specialists may deliver brief onsite lessons, including K-12, college and general public programs. Instruction may often include creating and developing special event materials, handouts, and online resources for participant use.
  • Research, design, and host single events as well as recurring monthly and annual events aimed at both K-12 communities, adults in the community, and members of campus.
  • Maintain relationships with local schools, UW's Admissions Department, and the Campus Visitor Center to include the Wyrkshop as a stop on tours for incoming freshmen, prospectives, and visiting high school groups.
  • Work with other entities on campus, among them the Native American Summer Institute and High School Summer Institute, to provide extended programming and opportunities.
  • Schedule and host regular tours, field trips, and special groups.
  • Demonstrate strong verbal, writing, and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrate strong graphic design skills.
  • Manage social media and awareness campaigns intended to increase visitor traffic.
  • Represent the Wyrkshop at event planning and functions, or other meetings and events, which may include reporting on projects, planning collaborations with CEAS and UW Outreach Coordinators as well as the Makerspace Coordinator.
  • Manage a small special events monthly budget and monitor expenses against budget allocations.
  • Attend staff meetings and/or training sessions to achieve Wyrkshop objectives, encourage teamwork, strengthen and promote communication, and enhance professional growth.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned.
