About The Position

Friends of the Children - Los Angeles (Friends LA) is seeking a Major Gifts Officer (MGO) to build and expand its individual giving program. This hybrid position requires candidates to live in Los Angeles County and be available to work on-site at least once a week. The MGO will play a crucial role in leading and growing major philanthropic support from individual donors, family foundations, and donor-advised funds. The ideal candidate will be a mission-driven, relationship-focused fundraiser with a proven track record in major gift fundraising.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree and/or at least five years of relevant fundraising experience.
  • Experience with donor identification, cultivation, solicitation, and closing major gifts of six figures and greater.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven ability to engage, motivate, and inspire others.
  • Ability to maintain donor and beneficiary confidentiality.
  • Consistent high energy, optimism, and a positive attitude.
  • Superior interpersonal skills and ability to communicate professionally with diverse groups.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and donor database management.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and within a team.
  • Leadership skills to work with and motivate Board members and volunteers.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with child welfare systems, foster care prevention and intervention strategies.
  • Lived experience in or with the foster care system.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a key member of the Advancement team, leading the major gifts program.
  • Develop and manage long-term funding relationships with individuals and foundations capable of contributing gifts of $10,000+.
  • Regularly meet with individual donors and prospects to qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major donors.
  • Create custom moves management strategies for each donor to renew and grow support.
  • Support the Executive Director, Chief Advancement Officer, and Board members in major gift fundraising strategies.
  • Develop compelling fundraising messaging, proposals, and storytelling strategies.
  • Collaborate with program staff to translate funding needs into donor opportunities.
  • Implement and oversee a comprehensive stewardship plan for individual donors.
  • Acknowledge major donors through public and private recognition.
  • Lead strategy for salon dinners and small cultivation events.
  • Track major gift metrics and report progress.
  • Utilize the donor database to track donor interactions and fundraising goals.
  • Represent Friends LA in the Los Angeles philanthropic community.
