About The Position

Join The Night Ministry as a Maintenance Worker Help keep our facilities clean, safe, and running smoothly to support critical services across Chicago. About The Night Ministry The Night Ministry is a Chicago-based nonprofit that provides housing, health care, and human connection to individuals experiencing homelessness or poverty. Our programs rely on well-maintained spaces that are safe, clean, and functional-allowing our staff to focus on supporting the needs of our community. As a Maintenance Worker , you'll play a hands-on role in maintaining our shelter and administrative facilities, vehicles, and equipment. Your work will help ensure our programs run smoothly and that clients and staff feel welcome and supported in their environments.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Comfortable using hand and power tools.
  • Able to lift heavy objects and perform physical labor in indoor and outdoor environments.
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
  • Able to respond to on-call emergencies as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with maintenance compliance requirements and audit preparation a plus.
  • Spanish language skills and blueprint-reading ability are helpful.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain clean and sanitary conditions in bathrooms, kitchens, offices, hallways, and common areas.
  • Replenish supplies and remove trash regularly.
  • Vacuum, sweep, mop, strip, and wax floors as needed.
  • Clean storage areas and perform occasional window, wall, and vent cleaning.
  • Perform minor repairs in carpentry, electrical, and plumbing systems.
  • Paint, change light bulbs, and maintain interior/exterior fixtures.
  • Conduct seasonal outdoor work (snow shoveling, mowing, litter pickup).
  • Assist with vehicle upkeep and documentation.
  • Drive agency vehicles for supply runs or scheduled maintenance.
  • Monitor and maintain HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and fire safety systems.
  • Schedule and perform routine system inspections and repairs.
  • Collaborate with the Facilities Manager on major repair needs or cost-saving recommendations.
  • Maintain logs and inspection records as needed.
  • Grease trap and sump pump maintenance (in conjunction with contracts).
  • Support with agency events and supply management.
  • Participate in safety trainings, staff development sessions, and organizational meetings.
  • Respond to on-call maintenance needs when necessary.
