About The Position

ONLY PERMANENT EMPLOYEES IN THE TITLE AND THOSE THAT ARE REACHABLE ON THE MAINTENANCE WORKER CIVIL SERVICE LIST ARE ELIGIBLE TO APPLY. Division/Program Summary: Plant Operations is committed to supporting the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s focus on protecting and promoting the health of all New Yorkers by providing comprehensive building services. These services include multiple building trades responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of the agency’s owned and leased sites. Position Summary: Under supervision, the Maintenance Worker performs routine maintenance and repair to support the safe, efficient, and continuous operation of DOHMH Public Health Laboratory, healthcare facilities and Animal Care Centers. Working as part of the Plant Operations team, the Maintenance Worker assists with building maintenance activities across assigned location, responds to service requests, and emergency response efforts. Duties may include basic repairs, equipment handling, cleaning, setup of spaces, and coordination with supervisors and skilled trades to ensure facilities are maintained in accordance with City standards safety requirements, and operational needs.

Requirements

  • Three years of full-time satisfactory experience as a mechanic, journeyperson or helper in the electrical trades, the mechanical trades, or the construction or maintenance of buildings; or
  • At least two years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in "1" above plus sufficient full-time training or education in the electrical, mechanical or construction trades in a trade school, technical school or vocational high school to make up the equivalent of three years of acceptable experience. Six months of experience will be credited for each year of full-time acceptable training or education.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain, adjust, and make minor repairs of building hardware, furniture, shelving and equipment. Replaces broken window and door glass.
  • Make minor repairs to masonry, woodwork, flooring, and walls. Makes minor repairs to building electrical, plumbing, and heating systems.
  • Visually inspect public buildings, structure, and equipment to assess and check for defects, malfunctions, and hazardous conditions.
  • Determine parts and materials needed to repair pending job orders and reports this information to Supervisor.
  • Maintain pneumatic controls for heat and cooling systems.
  • Repair ejector pits and compressors and assists with repairs of autoclaves. Attend to building emergencies as they arise.
  • Prepare reports; keep records; and may operate a motor vehicle in the performance of assigned duties.
  • Other assignments as mandated by supervision.
