Job Summary: Performs a variety of maintenance work requiring the use of a variety of trade practices associated with such occupations as air conditioning and refrigeration electrical work plumbing carpentry masonry and painting.

Requirements

  • GENERAL EXPERIENCE One year of experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of general maintenance practices involving the upkeep of buildings grounds fixtures equipment etc.
  • SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE One year of high school education may be substituted for 3 months of general experience up to a High School Diploma or GED for one year of general experience.
  • SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE One year of general maintenance work in involving simple maintenance work such as painting plumbing carpentry and electrical repairs possession of a valid state driver s license and the ability to meet Department of Transportation physical and medical requirements and pass a pre-employment drug screening and obtain certification from Navy Base Environmental Office to co-ordinate waste disposal.
  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Standing stooping bending kneeling climbing pushing pulling talking listening sitting driving and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts and carries material weighing up to 50 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Performs minor carpentry tasks to items such as cabinets platforms bins pallets etc. Uses tools such as hammers hand-saws screwdrivers power tools and brooms.
  • Inspects and ensures the proper working condition of equipment machinery and facilities by regularly performing property walk-throughs and inspections.
  • Prepares surfaces and paints a variety of interior items such as shelves counters and similar items. Uses premixed paints paints surfaces according to directions cleans and maintains brushes and other painting equipment.
  • May assist in the installation and repair of broken pipes leaky faucets clogged drains etc. Uses such tools as wrenches hacksaw pipe cutters shovels etc.
  • May perform preventive maintenance on forklifts hydraulic pallets jacks and conveyors checking for leaks proper water levels and that making sure that brake and clutch pedals are operating properly. Tightens bleed-off valve cleans filter oil reservoir and breather etc.
  • Takes periodic inventory of maintenance stock and equipment as required.
  • Performs tasks involved in the upkeep of buildings grounds fixtures and equipment.
  • Will also need to apply for forklift license pass test and complete physical exam.
  • Completes assignments delegated orally or in the form of work orders.
  • Typical assignments include simple painting plumbing carpentry electrical repairs and Waste handling.
  • Selects proper tools methods and techniques used to complete assignment.
  • Obtains certification from Navy Base Environmental Office to co-ordinate waste disposal.
  • Maintains compliance with local safety regulations. - Informs supervisor of hazardous conditions and unserviceable items.
  • Assist supervisor in developing plans for storage and arrangement of hazardous material products in accordance with prescribed regulations.
  • Ensure safe receipt storage and movement of hazardous and toxic materials and substances in accordance with facility DoN regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare a variety of documents such as waste turn-in forms uniform waste manifests land disposal restriction notifications certifications bills of lading and facility vehicle inspection forms.
  • Use various computer applications used for Waste Recycle management. Database for information on inventory chemical databases MSDS sheets manifest preparation software .
  • Utilizes knowledge and understanding of a variety of regulatory and industry standard documents used in the management of waste materials. These documents include but are not limited to Title 29 Code of Federal Regulations CFR Title 40 CFR Title 49 CFR Title 22 California Code of regulations California Health and Safety Code Chapter 6.5 and chemical safety books such as the Condensed Chemical Dictionary Sax s Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials and Merck Index and DOT s Emergency Response Guide Book.
  • Inspects waste containers for structural integrity proper identification markings and Department of Transportation DOT regulatory compliance examines and prepares a wide variety of records and documents associated with waste management including waste turn-in forms uniform hazardous waste manifest proper labeling of containers and land disposal restriction notification certifications prepares documents needed for and related to turn in of waste.
  • Required to load secure move and position waste material using forklifts trucks pallet jacks and other material handling equipment.
  • Required to identify incompatible materials using previous formal or informal training experience and available regulatory and industry standard publications.
  • May be required to inspect stored or accumulated waste to ensure proper containerization labeling placement within the waste facility and inventory control.
  • Must have thorough knowledge of Identification and labeling and placard procedures for disposal and or handling of waste.
  • Utilizes knowledge and understanding of policies and procedures regarding methods to process routine waste substances at the NEX including detailed knowledge and skill for stabilizing neutralizing combining consolidating and segregating.
  • Employs knowledge and understanding of a variety of shipping and labeling requirements necessary to package repackage and ship hazardous universal waste materials.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
  • Must have valid Driver s License for state where job is located as required to operate government vehicle to transport waste materials as needed.
  • Work is subject to review both during progress and upon completion for compliance with job requirement.
  • Receives advice guidance from Supervisor in connection with unusual problems.
  • Required to work independently or under minimal supervision to consolidate waste to select DoN proper personal protective equipment to select and use proper storage containers and to properly mark containers for storage and transportation.
  • Carries out policy of courtesy and customer service.
