About The Position

This position is located in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, in the Facility Management Division. This is a Career/Career-Conditional Full-time appointment. This job announcement is open to receive applications from the first 100 applicants. The job announcement will remain open until either the quota of 100 applicants, or 01/06/2025 is reached. Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Ability to lift and carry objects weighing over 75 pounds.
  • Ability to hike up to 15 miles daily while carrying tools.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in leading diverse volunteers in trail maintenance projects.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and equipment operation.
  • Experience in working in backcountry areas.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of 5 or more employees in trail maintenance and construction techniques.
  • Recognize existing and future maintenance problems and analyze drainage patterns.
  • Provide input to supervisor on trail work priorities, personnel and training recommendations, and equipment or supply needs.
  • Schedule individual phases of special projects or various district projects for the season.
  • Make daily on-site decisions concerning workflow and assignment of work for the crew.
  • Teach and demonstrate trail maintenance and construction methods to employees and volunteers.
  • Inspect all assigned equipment and vehicles to assure safe working conditions.
  • Perform masonry work, primarily dry stone, in the construction and maintenance of structures.
  • Perform carpentry work using heavy log and rough-sawn lumber on trail structures.
