About The Position

This is skilled work in the general maintenance and repair of RTS facilities, equipment, and passenger amenities. Positions allocated to this classification report to a designated supervisor and work under close supervision. Work in this class is distinguished from other classes by its level of skill.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma, and four (4) years of experience in construction and maintenance work, or an equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Valid Florida Driver's License
  • Forklift Certification is required within three (3) months of appointment.
  • Aerial Lift Certification is required within six (6) months of appointment.
  • Scissor Lift Certification is required within six (6) months of appointment.
  • Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) Certification, Intermediate Level required within six (6) months of appointment.
  • Thorough knowledge of principles, practices, and equipment of mechanical maintenance and repair.
  • Considerable knowledge of principles, practices, tools, and equipment necessary for the maintenance, repair, and service of mechanized equipment.
  • Considerable knowledge of occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions applicable to mechanical and electrical maintenance and repair work.
  • Considerable knowledge of building and facility maintenance practices and principles.
  • Knowledge of local and state regulations on local and state Right of Way (ROW) including Florida Building Code (FBC).
  • Strong electrical skills in troubleshooting and repair of electrical systems and equipment.
  • Skill in the use of basic hand tools and the operation of related complex power equipment, tools, machines, and testing instruments.
  • Ability to set up barricades and other temporary traffic control devices in accordance with current standards and provide flagging services to (and assist) crews working within flowing traffic.
  • Ability to analyze problems, exercise sound judgment, and make logical and valid conclusions.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records, reports, and work requests.
  • Ability to lead a small team.
  • Ability to work effectively with coworkers and the general public.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals.
  • Ability to use personal computers and tablets.
  • Ability to work effectively with internal and external customers.

  • Work requires physical strength and agility sufficient to safely perform all essential functions.
  • Work requires bending, kneeling, crawling, and pushing/pulling up to a maximum of 100lbs.
  • Work requires climbing/working at heights using ladders, scaffolding, lifts, and stairs.
  • Work may require the performance of tasks outdoors under varying climatic conditions.
  • Work may require exposure to hazardous conditions and noxious chemicals, including fiberglass materials, oil, oil sludge, and resins.
  • Work may require performing tasks in and around heavy traffic.
  • Work may require exposure to prolonged high noise levels.
  • Must maintain assigned tools.

Responsibilities

  • Provides training and instruction regarding facilities maintenance.
  • Inspects mechanical equipment, evaluates performance, and recommends/performs maintenance and repair.
  • Schedules for maintenance and inspections on shop and facility equipment.
  • Maintains and operates power saws, drills, cranes, pressure washers, lifts, and related equipment.
  • Works from manuals, sketches, blueprints, and instructional material.
  • Performs routine cleaning of transit facilities, trims grass, trims tree limbs, picks up trash, treats for insects, paints, and repairs structures.
  • Performs minor electrical, plumbing, and carpentry work as required to maintain RTS grounds and buildings, including replacing HVAC filters and light bulbs, cleaning, and painting.
  • Rebuilds and installs pumps, generators, and equipment.
  • Maintains gates and gate operators and coordinates the repair of security and access systems.
  • Maintains and repairs the automated bus wash.
  • Performs fire extinguisher inspection and inventory.
  • Performs annual departmental asset inventory.
  • Procures materials to perform routine maintenance activities.
  • Coordinate activities with contractors.
  • Performs monthly maintenance and record keeping for fuel storage tanks and equipment.
  • Drives vehicles and tows trailers to and from work sites.
  • Attends work on a continuous and regular basis.
