About The Position

Performs park clean-up maintenance tasks and assigned park clean-up operations. Responsibilities include training, supervising, and monitoring work assigned to the park clean-up crew. This position requires on-site presence and is not a remote role. Subject to the Collective Bargaining Agreement through Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 73. This position is required to adhere to all Waukegan Park District (District) policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Age: 18 years and older
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) preferred
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience in park clean-up and maintenance preferred
  • Microsoft Office experience in Excel/Word/Outlook
  • Communicate effectively through listening, speaking, writing, and non-verbal cues
  • Complete necessary certifications and training for all applicable equipment
  • Demonstrate initiative and responsibility
  • Manage workload and hours with minimal direction
  • Make timely and effective decisions
  • Follow procedures to obtain appropriate results
  • Develop positive rapport with interpersonal departments, public, vendors, contractors, media, and community groups
  • Valid and unrestricted driver’s license, not including vision restrictions for corrective lenses, required
  • First Aid/CPR/AED certification required within one (1) year of hire date

  • Pesticide Commercial Not-for-Hire Operator License preferred
  • Pesticide Commercial Not-for-Hire Applicator License preferred

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine park maintenance functions including, but not limited to, debris clean-up, garbage removal, picnic table delivery, and graffiti removal.
  • Operates hand and power tools and other maintenance and mechanical equipment necessary to complete tasks.
  • Operates high-risk equipment including, but not limited to, heavy machinery, trucks, trailers, tractors, woodchippers, sod cutters, and chain saws.
  • Monitors and updates the Work Assignments form for assigned tasks.
  • Maintains equipment, tools, and work areas.
  • Constructs, installs, maintains, and repairs site amenities including, but not limited to, bleachers, benches, signs, fencing, picnic tables, grills, and trash receptacles.
  • Assists with preparation of project work schedules.
  • Performs snow removal operations including, but not limited to, plowing, snow blowing, shoveling, and salting of walkways and parking lots as required.
  • Assists with landscape, playground, and horticultural maintenance.
  • Monitors and maintains inventory of park clean-up supplies and order materials as needed to ensure adequate stock for daily operations.
  • Collaborates and assists with other maintenance staff and departments to support park operations, projects, and special events.
  • Provides on the job training and mentorship to part-time and seasonal staff.
  • Makes recommendations and creates work orders for part-time staff and assists in completing work orders as needed.
  • Answers customer inquiries or directs to appropriate staff as necessary.
  • Works special events as needed.
  • Assists staff in the performance of their duties.
  • Works evenings, weekends, and holidays as assigned.
  • Responds to the public and District staff inquiries and needs with promptness and professionalism.
  • Conducts duties adhering to all safety requirements.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities assigned by the supervisor to support the department or the District.
