About The Position

This is manual labor performing skilled and semi-skilled tasks at the Regional Transit System (RTS) facilities. Positions allocated to this classification report to a designated supervisor and work under direct supervision. Work in this class is distinguished from other classes by its emphasis on maintenance.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalent diploma and twelve (12) months of experience in laboring work, including the use of tools and equipment used in maintenance, repair, or construction work.
  • Valid Florida Driver’s License
  • Forklift Certification is required within three (3) months of appointment.
  • Aerial Lift Certification is required within six (6) months of appointment.
  • Scissor Lift Certification is required within six (6) months of appointment.
  • Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) Certification, Intermediate Level required within six (6) months of appointment.
  • Knowledge to set up barricades and other temporary traffic control devices in accordance with current standards.
  • Knowledge of the precautions necessary to perform work safely.
  • Knowledge of tools used in grounds keeping, facility maintenance, and construction.
  • Knowledge of working with electricity and repair methodology.
  • Knowledge of local and state regulations on local and state Right of Way (ROW).
  • Basic electrical troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to analyze problems, exercise sound judgment, and make logical and valid conclusions.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records, reports, and work requests.
  • Ability to perform manual tasks involving physical strength and endurance under variable weather conditions.
  • Ability to work effectively with coworkers and the general public, including angry and/or abusive individuals.
  • Ability to read and understand detailed and complex work schedules and diagrams.
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision.
  • Ability to conform to grooming and dress codes (uniforms furnished).

Responsibilities

  • Constructs, repairs, and maintains roadside shelters, lights, solar panels, benches, and trash cans.
  • Services, repairs, and maintains pumps and motors.
  • Repairs, overhauls, and installs shop equipment.
  • Installs and repairs hardware on shelters, lights, solar panels, benches, and trash cans. Including minor electrical repairs on facilities and shop equipment.
  • Performs carpentry and painting tasks, including prefabrication and assembly tasks.
  • Repairs and replaces toilets and sinks and performs minor plumbing repairs.
  • Repairs and replaces electrical outlets/lights and performs minor electrical repairs.
  • Works from sketches, blueprints, and instruction material.
  • Performs routine grounds, road right-of-way cleaning, and preventive maintenance at bus stops and transit facilities. This includes trimming and pruning of shrubbery and small trees, edging sidewalks and curbs, raking leaves, emptying and picking up trash, and reporting/repairing deficiencies.
  • Cleans, maintains, and makes minor repairs to equipment.
  • Operates power saws, drills, cranes, pressure washers, lifts, and related equipment.
  • Inspects, cleans, fuels, and washes maintenance trucks and associated equipment.
  • Drives vehicles and tows trailers to and from various facilities.
  • Maintains the orderly storage of tools and equipment.
  • Inspect fire extinguishers and eye wash stations.
  • Keeps required records.
  • Transfers waste products from satellite containers, engine oil, coolant, and used oil filters to storage tanks and/or shipping drums.
  • Moves full drums into the containment area and ensures drums are properly marked.
  • Coordinates with waste contractors' staff on site to identify products awaiting disposal.
  • Check the waste manifest for correct quantities/products being transported for disposal.
  • Maintains oil water separator, removes sludge from pit sumps, and properly stores waste.
  • Attends work on a continuous and regular basis.
  • May supervise temporary helpers.
  • May require moving and lifting heavy equipment, tables, and chairs for special events and programs.
  • May monitor special events and programs, including cleaning up at the conclusion.
  • May be required to transport, mix, handle, or use hazardous materials (other than gasoline, batteries, pumping fuel, or access to normal janitorial cleaning materials).
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
