About The Position

The Maintenance Worker I position in the Parks and Recreation Department is responsible for performing a variety of manual labor tasks related to the maintenance of city parks, recreational areas, and municipal properties. This role involves both light and heavy labor, including landscaping, cleaning, and general maintenance duties, often under the supervision of higher classification employees. The position requires flexibility in scheduling, including the possibility of working evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of tools used in landscape maintenance, general ground maintenance, and construction.
  • Working knowledge of tree trimming methods and safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards of the trade and proper safety practices.
  • Ability to operate assigned equipment safely.
  • Ability to operate a City vehicle and possess the required license.
  • Ability to work a flexible evening work schedule, including weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to paint and install playground equipment and fences, assist in installing irrigation systems when required.
  • Ability to lay out and paint lines on playing fields using a paint-striping machine.
  • Ability to assist the City in carrying out a hurricane plan to completion.
  • Ability to fill out and complete incident and accident report forms.
  • Ability to understand and carry out instructions and complete work assignments correctly.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, often under hot and humid conditions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other City employees, Department officials, and the general public.

Nice To Haves

  • Some experience in ground maintenance, landscape maintenance, ball field maintenance, construction, and repair work.
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent GED preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Spray foliage, lawns, and sport fields for weed and pest control.
  • Cut and edge grass with hand tools and power-operated machines.
  • Plant trees and shrubbery to maintain landscaping throughout the City.
  • Trim and fertilize trees, shrubbery, lawns, and sport fields.
  • Remove dirt, rubbish, weeds, leaves, and other refuse from grounds.
  • Prune trees to eliminate hazards and preserve their beauty on municipal property.
  • Clean and care for public buildings and other municipal property, including painting, sweeping, mopping, and washing windows.
  • Erect and move portable stages, benches, seats, and chairs as needed.
  • Line playing fields, drag, water, weed, and maintain landscaped areas of sports fields.
  • Repair and maintain playground equipment to keep it in proper operating condition.
  • Perform semi-skilled carpentry, painting, plumbing, and landscaping tasks.
  • Assist skilled trade workers as a helper.
  • Exercise care and safety in the use of equipment and tools required to complete assigned tasks.
  • Perform general maintenance such as painting, custodial duties, and restroom cleaning as needed.
  • Complete assigned duties before, during, and after a declared emergency.
