About The Position

Maintenance Worker I: This is the entry level position. Employees at this level are not expected to perform with the same independence of direction and judgment on matters allocated to the journey level. Employees work under general supervision while learning job tasks. Maintenance Worker II: This is the journey level position. This class is distinguished from Maintenance Worker I by the assignment of the full range of duties and lead responsibility related to specific projects, as assigned. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the use, purpose, and maintenance of tools, equipment, and construction methods.
  • Familiarity with traffic control methods, equipment, and their application.
  • Ability to perform manual labor and semi-skilled tasks in construction repair, and maintenance of public right of way and infrastructure.
  • Ability to identify and troubleshoot equipment issues, interpret work orders, and complete documentation.
  • Principles and practices of general workplace safety.
  • Strong communication, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • One (1) year of experience in field construction, equipment operations, or maintenance work.
  • Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license
  • Ability to obtain and possess a Class A California driver's license including appropriate endorsements within the twelve (12) month probationary period.
  • Two (2) years of experience in field construction and maintenance work similar to the Maintenance Worker I classification
  • Possession of a valid California Class A Commercial driver's license.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and repair public right-of-way including trash pick-up and removal, graffiti removal, and weed abatement.
  • Operate and maintain light equipment in public right-of-way and City property.
  • Maintain and repair concrete structures, including sidewalks, curbs, gutters, cross gutters/splash aprons, concrete site preparation or restoration, grinding/ scabbing, concrete slurry, and block walls.
  • Maintain and repair asphalt roadways, including streets, alleys, asphalt curbs and flow lines, asphalt maintenance, and pothole patching and repair.
  • Perform traffic control, including setting up and removing signs and cones, effecting lane closures, and flagging and directing traffic around work sites.
  • Assist in training new employees; monitor and assign tasks to court referrals workers and contract labor as appropriate.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.
  • Operate power equipment such as weed whips, chain saw, gas blowers, and tractors for street maintenance.
  • Perform preventative maintenance procedures and minor maintenance and adjustments on equipment used.
  • Clean and care for tools and equipment.
  • Apply safe work practices in the public right of way and other assigned work environments.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
