About The Position

The Utilities Department is recruiting for three (3) Maintenance Worker I/II positions. ABOUT THIS OPPORTUNITY WITH THE UTILITIES DEPARTMENT The Utilities Department has three Maintenance Worker I/II vacancies in the following operating divisions: Solid Waste Collections, Solid Waste Disposal (Landfill), and Wastewater Treatment/Sewer Collections. Candidates who hold a valid commercial driver's license and have experience with performing maintenance or operating light to heavy equipment are highly encouraged to apply for this opportunity. Note: A condition of employment for positions assigned to the Utilities Department is to obtain a valid Class B driver's license or higher. This requirement must be fulfilled within one year of employment. FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES This recruitment may be used to fill future Maintenance Worker I/II vacancies in the Public Works Streets Division. The Maintenance Worker I/II position is a flex series and candidates may be hired at either level based on their experience and the hiring department's needs. POSITION SUMMARY Under the general direction of an assigned supervisor, the Maintenance Worker I/II performs a wide variety of skilled, unskilled, or semi-skilled maintenance work, including the operation of light or heavy equipment. Supervision is not normally a responsibility of this classification, but incumbents may act as lead workers for temporarily assigned employees or special projects. Maintenance Worker II may supervise the work of unskilled and semi-skilled laborers and/or court appointed workers. These classifications are currently in multiple divisions and departments across the City and may be flexibly staffed at the discretion of the Department Director. The Maintenance Worker I/II position is an Individual Contributor role that provides maintenance, repair and other services to internal and external customers. Their role enables Santa Maria residents to enjoy safe, beautiful and well-maintained parks and facilities.

Requirements

  • Sufficient training or experience in maintenance work; and
  • Graduation from high school, and/or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
  • A minimum of two years of experience as a Maintenance Worker I, or part-time experience as a Laborer III, equivalent to that gained as a Maintenance Worker I in the area of assignment or those exceptions as indicated herein for a certain division.
  • To promote to Maintenance Worker II in another division or area of assignment, applicant must successfully complete a performance test designed to demonstrate competency in the position sought; and
  • Graduation from high school, and/or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
  • Employees may be considered for a level II advancement after completion of two years in their current assignment, at the Department Director discretion.
  • Current technical/professional knowledge of complex principles, methods, standards and techniques associated with the scope of work of a recognized profession, such as:
  • Common hand tools and light power tools; follow oral and written instructions; read and interpret maps, drawings, product label instructions, and equipment operation procedures.
  • Analytical skills to operate and perform minor adjustments to mechanical devices and motorized equipment; general construction and maintenance materials, procedures, and equipment as related to parks, streets and facilities maintenance, and solid waste.
  • Effective verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Microsoft Office Suite (or equivalent).
  • Effective use of computer and other office equipment.
  • Possession of licenses and/or certificates associated with the assignment, such as:
  • Backflow Prevention Certificate for testing and repair.
  • State of California Department of Pesticide Regulation Qualified Applicator Certificate.
  • For positions assigned to the Utilities Department:
  • A valid Class B driver's license or higher must be obtained within one year of hire date.
  • Possession of a valid Class "C" Driver License upon hire.
  • Must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record and meet City liability requirements to drive for City business.
  • Positions in the Utilities and Public Works departments may be required to obtain a valid and appropriate Class "B" or "A" California Driver License and additional endorsements for the operation of specialized equipment after employment within one year of employment date.
  • Under the Department of Transportation Drug and Alcohol Program, may be required to successfully complete a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and submit to random drug and/or alcohol testing throughout employment with the City.
  • Requires completion of a background investigation to the satisfaction of the City.
  • The incumbent must meet the physical requirements of the job class and have mobility, balance, coordination, vision, hearing and dexterity levels appropriate to the duties to be performed.

Responsibilities

  • Positions assigned to Utilities Solid Waste Collections or Disposal (Landfill) may:
  • Wash, deliver, exchange, repair, and paint containers.
  • Perform traffic control and maintain ditch lines.
  • Perform entry-level refuse collection and/or landfill disposal duties.
  • Provide scalehouse relief if assigned to disposal (landfill).
  • Operate light and heavy equipment including tractors, water trucks, and solid waste collection vehicles.
  • Perform semi-skilled work including: fence repair, maintaining ditch lines, welding, litter control, weed abatement, cover repairs, and minor maintenance of leachate, contact water and landfill gas systems.
  • Operate the scalehouse if assigned to disposal (landfill).
  • Perform traffic control and load checks.
  • Operate heavy equipment including dozers, compactors, scrapers, graders loaders, water trucks, and tractors.
  • Positions assigned to Utilities Wastewater Treatment/Sewer Collections may:
  • Perform landscape and weed abatement, facility washing and housekeeping, and sludge bed maintenance.
  • Complete sewer line cleaning and videoing, clean drainage inlets, and perform weed and trash abatement.
  • May be placed in charge of a job site in absence of a supervisor, crew leader, or senior crew leader or when a small crew is assigned to a job.
  • Scope of assigned area will depend on departmental structure and is at the discretion of the department director.
