About The Position

The Maintenance Worker for the Highway Department is responsible for constructing, repairing, and maintaining County roadways and bridges. This position involves operating both light and heavy construction and maintenance equipment, as well as performing manual labor. The role is essential in ensuring the safety and functionality of the County's transportation infrastructure.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Two years of experience in the operation of highway construction and/or maintenance equipment.
  • Valid CDL - Minnesota Class A driver's license without restrictions.
  • Tanker endorsement or the ability to obtain within six months of employment.
  • Able to report to work within 45 minutes if necessary.
  • Experience using a personal computer.

Nice To Haves

  • Snow removal and ice control operations in a road system environment.
  • Maintenance Worker experience with a County, City, or State office.
  • Vocational training with experience in the operation and maintenance of light construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Experience making minor repairs and adjustments to service equipment.
  • Experienced in the operation of trucks, tractors, and other light automotive equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Operates heavy equipment including single axle and tandem trucks, pavers, motor graders, shouldering machine, front-end loaders, skid steers, water truck, loader, and street sweeper.
  • Plows and wings snow and applies ice control materials to County roads to maintain safe roadways.
  • Installs and/or repairs bridges, culverts, fences, guard rails, and snow fences.
  • Cuts brush and trees with hand and power tools; uses shovels to load and distribute fill and patching material and removes snow on bridges.
  • Fills patches and cracks of bituminous roadways.
  • Hauls material including fill, gravel, and bituminous mix.
  • Removes debris and dead animals from roadways and ditches.
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance on equipment; assists in the performance of mechanical repair of equipment to ensure safe and proper working condition of all tools and equipment.
  • Attends work in a regular and timely manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or apparent.
