About The Position

The Maintenance Worker Helper at the VA St. Louis Health Care System is responsible for performing general maintenance and repair tasks as directed by the Maintenance and Operations Leadership. This role involves a variety of duties including diagnosing equipment issues, performing cleaning tasks, and ensuring the maintenance of a safe and clean environment for the facility's operations.

Requirements

  • Evidence of training or experience sufficient to perform the duties of this position.
  • Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision.
  • Experience in equipment assembly, installation, and repair.
  • Ability to interpret instructions and specifications, including blueprint reading.
  • Knowledge of materials and measuring instruments.
  • Technical practices related to the maintenance field.
  • Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Determine material requirements and diagnose trouble to make necessary repairs to various equipment.
  • Follow specific procedures for environmental cleaning independently.
  • Work safely with chemicals, tools, and equipment.
  • Maintain the correct tools for plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, housekeeping, and general mechanical tasks.
  • Repair plumbing fixtures, including faucets and leaks, and unplug stopped-up plumbing fixtures.
  • Make repairs in major medical buildings and other facilities on campus.
  • Receive assignments verbally or through written requests, work orders, or minor repair boards.
  • Perform a full range of cleaning duties to maintain acceptable cleanliness levels in assigned areas.
  • Operate powered cleaning equipment and perform maintenance on it, including lubricating and changing brushes.
  • Work from ladders to clean ceilings, walls, light fixtures, and medical equipment.
  • Design tasks for other housekeepers to ensure work begins promptly.
  • Identify problems to supervisors and seek necessary guidance.
  • Check work performed to ensure it meets supervisory directives regarding policy, procedure, and safety.
