About the position

The City of El Cerrito is seeking to fill a full-time Maintenance Worker position within the Public Works Department. This role is essential for maintaining city facilities, parks, streets, and sidewalks, while also responding to emergencies and safety hazards. The ideal candidate will possess strong communication skills, a solid work ethic, and a willingness to learn various maintenance tasks, contributing to the overall quality of life in the community.

Responsibilities

  • Operate construction and maintenance equipment for various operations involving streets, sidewalks, and storm drains.
  • Install traffic cones and barricades around work areas to ensure safety.
  • Spread asphalt for patching and repairing streets.
  • Use concrete cutting and breaking equipment, operate jackhammers, pour and finish concrete, and perform rough carpentry work.
  • Maintain landscaped areas, including watering, weeding, trimming, and fertilizing plants.
  • Assist in the maintenance of sprinklers and irrigation equipment.
  • Operate a variety of power construction and maintenance equipment, including dump trucks and backhoes.
  • Trim and remove trees from City property and repair storm drains and catch basins.
  • Participate in moving and installing park and recreational equipment.
  • Perform work in emergency situations as required.

Requirements

  • Some work experience in heavy labor is highly desirable for Entry level.
  • One year of experience performing duties comparable to those of a Maintenance Worker - Entry level for Non-Entry level.
  • Ability to read and write at a level required by the job.
  • Possess or the ability to obtain a valid Class C California Driver's license by date of hire.

Nice-to-haves

  • Additional specialized training in heavy construction methods is highly desirable.
