About The Position

The Maintenance Technician contributes to the overall mission of Public Works by working as a crewmember and contributing to public health and safety. This role is responsible for assisting in all related maintenance administered by the relevant division. All Maintenance Technicians perform repairs using general knowledge of basic construction techniques, operate single/tandem axle trucks, heavy equipment, and various power/hand tools. They also perform routine maintenance of vehicles and equipment, assist in securing work areas, and maintain safe worksites by placing appropriate warning devices while wearing special protective devices. The technician answers and responds to public and staff inquiries, maintains records regarding work completed, and works with contractors and developers on repairs and maintenance. Attendance at meetings and training is required. Specifically for the Water Distribution division, the technician repairs and maintains pipelines, valves, fire hydrants, water services, meters, and other related equipment. The position also involves responding to emergency call-backs, including seasonal emergencies, and working overtime as needed to complete regular and seasonal work. Technicians may also assist supervisors and other departmental personnel in other projects for the benefit of the City and/or department, and perform division-specific duties such as production of signs, landscaping, yard repair, meter repairs, and road right-of-way mowing.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Obtain and maintain a valid Class A commercial driver’s license with airbrakes and tanker endorsement within 90 days of employment (Class B for Traffic division)
  • Employees of Public Works Streets, Fleet and Stormwater and Public Works Water and Wastewater Maintenance and Public Works Traffic crews must reside within a 25-mile radius of the respective Public Works Shops for the purpose of responding to call backs and after-hours or on-call duties

Nice To Haves

  • Two (2) years relevant experience in construction or related area

Responsibilities
