The Maintenance Technician supports Ivy Tech’s mission of providing accessible, world-class education by ensuring that facilities are safe, reliable, and welcoming for students, faculty, staff, and community members. This includes performing preventive and corrective maintenance, responding to urgent building needs, supporting events, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, and delivering excellent customer service to students, faculty, and staff.

  • Complete and document work orders promptly in the work order system.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance and record findings accurately.
  • Maintain required safety and regulatory compliance documentation.
  • Operate, maintain, and repair campus building systems including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, mechanical, fire protection, and life safety systems.
  • Monitor and adjust Building Automation Systems for HVAC, lighting, and energy management.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Assist with inspections and testing of generators, boilers, elevators, and other life safety equipment as required by codes and regulations.
  • Coordinate and support contractors and vendors performing work on campus.
  • Assist with small projects, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple assignments effectively.
  • Ensure assigned projects are completed on time and within established budget parameters.
  • Perform seasonal outdoor tasks including mowing, trimming, snow and ice removal, asphalt maintenance, and basic landscaping.
  • Support custodial and sanitation standards as needed.
  • Move, assemble, transport, and deliver furniture, equipment, and materials.
  • Provide event setup, on-site support, and teardown.
  • Respond professionally to requests from students, employees, and visitors.
  • Provide basic safety, access, and directional assistance as needed.
  • Participate in an assigned on-call rotation for after-hours emergencies, including weather events, building system failures, or urgent facility needs.
  • Follow institutional emergency response procedures.
  • Recommend process improvements and best practices.
  • Assist with purchasing and inventory of tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • May provide guidance to facilities team and student workers.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate degree or higher in a technical field preferred.
  • Minimum three (3) years of related facilities maintenance experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and follow manufacturer instructions, blueprints, and schematics.
  • Strong working knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and life-safety systems.
  • Basic computer skills (MS Office, Workday, ServiceNow).
  • Ability to operate tools and equipment and follow instructions.
  • Valid driver’s license with insurability under Ivy Tech’s insurance program.
  • Ability to lift up to 70 pounds and perform physical work, including climbing ladders, working at heights, entering confined spaces, and performing indoor/outdoor tasks in varying weather conditions

  • OSHA 10 or 30 required (or obtained within 6 months of hire).
  • Ability to safely operate ladders, scaffolding, aerial lifts, and material-handling equipment (forklifts, pallet jacks, etc.) and obtain certifications as required.
  • Participate in safety drills, training, fit testing, and required certifications
  • Associate degree or higher in a technical field preferred.
  • Minimum three (3) years of related facilities maintenance experience preferred.
  • EPA 608 certification preferred
  • Additional trade licenses are a plus.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and training to maintain certifications and current knowledge of industry standards.
