About The Position

The Maintenance Technician II for the Riparian division is responsible for all phases of maintenance tasks within the Parks & Recreation Department. This role requires good judgment, independence, initiative, and professional expertise in conducting day-to-day operations while adhering to safety rules and regulations. The incumbent will interact with the public and various agencies with professionalism and respect.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 2 years' experience in natural areas restoration/management.
  • Knowledge of Fort Wayne's waterways.
  • Previous boating experience.
  • Chainsaw operation and cleaning experience.
  • Knowledge of Indiana and Midwest native and invasive species, plant identification, and ecology.
  • Knowledge of ecological restoration techniques.
  • Effective communication skills, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work in an outdoor environment.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with fellow workers and maintain good relations with park patrons.

Nice To Haves

  • Valid Class A CDL preferred, or the ability to obtain one within 1 year of hire date.
  • Completion of Official Indiana Boating Safety Course within 1 year of hire date.
  • Acquire State of Indiana Pesticide Registered Technician certification within 1 year of hire date.
  • Acquire and maintain State of Indiana Pesticide Applicators License-Category 5 Aquatic Pest Management within 2 years of hire date.

Responsibilities

  • Removes hazards from the river channel and river banks, including trash, logs, and woody debris.
  • Operates equipment safely, including work boats, knuckle-boom crane, trucks, brush chipper, and various hand and power tools.
  • Identifies, removes, and controls invasive plants and tree species on river banks using herbicides and other techniques.
  • Inventories and monitors invasive plants along riverbanks to ensure treatment effectiveness.
  • Installs native seeds, plants, bioengineering, and erosion control.
  • Installs, maintains, and removes the City's dock systems during the recreational season.
  • Assists with planning and executing volunteer events throughout the year, including weekends.
  • Assists with planning special river events, including weekends and evenings.
  • Utilizes various chemical agents and equipment for maintenance tasks.
  • Performs miscellaneous ground work and litter removal.
  • Maintains professional working relationships with team members and management.
  • Maintains accurate reports of daily work.
  • Assists supervisor in overseeing contracted services and projects.
