Job Description About IPSD Caterpillar's Industrial Power Systems Division (IPSD) designs, tests and manufactures 0.5 to 18L engines that not only power Caterpillar machines, but also power over 5000 other applications including Marine, Petroleum, Industrial Applications, Electric Generators, and Locomotives. Job Summary: Caterpillar's Industrial Power Systems Division has an exciting opportunity for a Maintenance Technician III position located in San Antonio, TX. In this role, you will answer work orders to maintain the facility and equipment that support the production of Caterpillar diesel engines. Maintenance Technicians report to Section Managers and will be assigned to areas within the business to meet customer and company demands.

Requirements

  • 1-3 years of work experience in maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing industrial electrical / electronic production and material-handling equipment
  • 2 years of work experience in a new generation-ASRS production facility, or comparable automated production plant / facility
  • Experience in maintenance and repair of production facilities systems and equipment
  • Knowledge of lockout / tagout procedures
  • Understand computer system functions and their interrelationships
  • Understand and adhere to safety practices
  • Abide by OSHA regulations
  • Familiar with PM procedures, including performing PMs, logging completion, etc.
  • Able to troubleshoot and diagnose problems with mechanical, electrical, and electronic systems, such as Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), System Control Software (SCS), scanners, etc.
  • Able to recommend and implement corrective action
  • Familiar with PLC logic principles
  • Must demonstrate reasonable mastery of conveyors, robotic equipment, and industrial trucks (ASRS, AKL, and Auto Guided Vehicles (AGVs)) in new-generation production facilities
  • Ability to read and understand mechanical, building blueprints, and electrical schematics
  • Must be able to read PLC ladder logic and be able to transfer data from PLCs to laptops to personal computers and back
  • Knowledge of basic electricity (AC/DC theory, relays, switches, solenoids, fuses, breakers, etc.), power generation and distribution (including three-phase), electrical safety, National Electric Code, digital multimeter operation, and motor theory and protection
  • Must be familiar with electronics such as photo sensors, PLCs, remote I/Os, servo drives, and variable frequency drives
  • Mechanical knowledge of basic machines (pulleys, levers, etc.), pneumatics, hydraulics, gears, reducers, bearings, lubrication theory, drive components (sheaves, sprockets, chain belts, take-ups), and equipment alignment. Knowledge of all phases of cutting and welding
  • Ability to adjust to constantly changing priorities and ability to multi-task
  • Experience working in a team environment
  • Willing to train less experienced technicians
  • Must have good organization skills, computer skills (Word and Excel), and basic math skills (Algebra)
  • Must be willing and able to climb to levels above the shop floor, or use a man-lift, as needed, to make repairs

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in production facilities assembly and material-handling equipment
  • General understanding of Robotics technology and related systems where applicable
  • Understanding of lockout / tag out procedures
  • Experience with basic hand and power tools in an industrial setting
  • Understanding of mechanical theory, including the construction and operation of bearings, hydraulics, pneumatics, and conveyors
  • Mechanical knowledge of basic machines (pulleys, levers, etc.), pneumatics, hydraulics, gears, reducers, bearings, lubrication theory, drive components (sheaves, sprockets, chain belts, take-ups), and equipment alignment

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on production and material-handling equipment in the production facilities building(s), in accordance with work orders and technical documentation
  • Respond to service requests with little or no supervision and direction without interrupting operations
  • Respond to operational calls for troubleshooting/diagnosing problems with assembly systems and equipment
  • Coordinate with Level III Technicians and maintenance management to facilitate the professional development of Level I Maintenance Technicians
  • Coordinate the activities, plans, and programs of the designated areas of responsibility and maximize uptime of the production facilities while adhering to all policies and procedures
  • Using CMMS-generated preventive maintenance worksheets to maintain production facilities machinery and equipment
  • Monitor maintenance upkeep checklists to ensure efficient equipment operation.
  • Complete CMMS work order documentation for complete work history and parts inventory tracking
  • Maintain a safe work environment by documenting and correcting potential safety issues concerning assembly and material-handling equipment or the facility
  • Operate, troubleshoot, and repair electrical and mechanical assembly and material-handling equipment
  • Perform preventive, corrective, and predictive maintenance on high tech automated equipment
  • Audit Level I Maintenance Technician work for consistency and correctness
