About The Position

The Maintenance Technician (Carpenter) performs semi-skilled carpentry tasks to ensure the safe and efficient operation of fixtures, apparatus, and other elements in the trade area, as well as to maintain and repair school facilities. This role involves building and repairing frameworks, supports, and simple wooden articles, as well as repairing roofs, ceilings, doors, walls, cabinets, furniture, and floor tiles. The technician will work under general supervision and will be given specific instructions for tasks, with a higher-level employee available for assistance when needed.

Requirements

  • Valid NC Driver's license.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Typical handyman skills for basic repairs to a variety of building components.
  • Familiarity with basic hand and power tools.
  • Ability to follow instructions, problem solve, and complete tasks as instructed.
  • Capacity to work both in a team setting and independently.
  • Willingness to adapt to changing schedules and job duties.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and willingness to learn new skills.
  • Effective communication skills in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to lift heavy materials and perform physical activities such as balancing, bending, climbing, and kneeling.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of building codes.
  • Comfortable working at height (ladders, aerial lifts, scaffolding, on roofs).

Responsibilities

  • Erects, moves, and works from scaffolding and ladders while ensuring safety precautions are followed.
  • Performs semi-skilled roof, ceiling, and door hardware repair functions.
  • Assists in the repair of drywall and the moving or altering of non-load bearing walls.
  • Assists in making and repairing cabinets.
  • Replaces floor tiles and measures and marks materials for cutting.
  • Cuts and drills wood and other materials using hand and power tools.
  • Joins materials with nails, screws, or glue.
  • Checks accuracy of work with levels, rulers, and measuring tapes.
  • Cleans and maintains equipment, tools, and supplies.
  • Cuts and installs glass as needed.
  • Conducts fire extinguisher inspections and replacements.
  • Delivers materials to schools with supervisor.
