Job Summary: Responsible for maintenance of the building, grounds, and/or animal enclosures as assigned. Job Duties/Responsibilities: include the following but others may be assigned. Properly maintains tools, equipment and supplies used in performance of duties. Building unique projects for animals. Repair of animal enclosures. All phases of carpentry work. Operates light and heavy equipment as assigned. Performs cutting and welding as assigned. Reads and works from blueprints or other detail drawings, cut sheets, etc. Performs concrete work, including building forms, setting up and finishing concrete. Uses building skills including framing, trimming out, cabinet work, paint work, and miscellaneous metal work. Assists in areas of plumbing, electrical, HVAC when needed. Maintains safe work habits and abides by rules set by Zoo. Reports unsafe or hazardous work conditions, and utilizes personal protection equipment. Acts a liaison with the public by courteously answering questions and enforcing the feeding and safety rules for animals and public. Adapts to changing company policies and procedures. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, construction documents, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports. Ability to write routine reports, and the ability to speak effectively to visitors or employees of the zoo. Other projects as assigned. Job Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and /or ability required. Use tools related to position. Welding experience. Required at least 2 years of experience within a similar position, 5 years preferred. Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, construction documents, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports. Ability to write routine reports, and the ability to speak effectively to visitors or employees of the zoo. Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions and/or effectively and safely apply procedures, rules, and policies to performance of duties. Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and climb ladders. The employee is frequently required to bend and walk, and to lift and/or push or pull in excess of 60 pounds. This position requires driving vehicles and unloading trucks. Hearing and vision are necessary for safely performing the duties of this job. Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide and perform various calculations associated with construction and cost estimating. Equipment Operation: Ability to operate or learn to operate any tools or equipment commonly associated with maintenance or construction. Work Environment: Outside work in extreme heat, cold, and wetness, exposure to dirty and dusty conditions and noise, exposure to toxic and non-toxic materials and odors, vibration from equipment, constant standing, walking, stooping, bending, sitting, reaching, pushing/pulling, and handling of equipment/supplies, work with light equipment and machinery, ladders, lifting, and or carrying approximately 60 pounds, possible exposure to electrical shock, hazards of working in close contact with wild and/or exotic animals, work in groups and/or alone.
