About The Position

The Maintenance Tech I position involves performing a variety of building maintenance, habitat-related, and construction tasks that require specific skills. The role includes rough and finish carpentry, masonry and tile work, and maintenance of doors, gates, locks, and related hardware. The technician will also be responsible for maintaining and repairing various building-related items, assisting with animal transport, and constructing or repairing crates for safe animal care. Additional responsibilities include concrete patching, installing habitat accessories, and maintaining guest-facing items within the zoo. The technician will monitor the work order system and contribute to establishing standards for new construction and project execution.

Requirements

  • Valid Michigan Driver's License
  • Expertise in one or more of the skills listed in the Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Graduation from a four-year high school, trades, or vocational high school; or GED

Responsibilities

  • Maintain, troubleshoot, repair habitat shift doors/gates/locks and related opening/closing systems.
  • Construct/repair crates or other items to assist Life Sciences staff in safe transport and appropriate care of animals.
  • Assist with moving of animals when required by helping secure transport crates and opening/closing of doors.
  • Maintain and repair a variety of building-related items including doors, locking mechanisms, openers, closers, thresholds, door sweeps, latches, etc.
  • Perform concrete patching on existing surfaces of small scale and scope for guest and staff safety.
  • Install/construct a variety of habitat and building accessories: tool racks, hose racks, eye bolts, small furniture, white boards, etc.
  • Maintain and repair certain types of fencing at animal habitats or along public pathways.
  • Maintain and repair a variety of accessories inside the zoo that are guest-facing: benches, picnic tables, signage, etc.
  • Construct, maintain and repair animal enrichment items.
  • Monitor work order system and work to complete items in a timely manner.
  • Review specifications, shop drawings and plans and provide feedback/suggestions in support of project and construction teams.
  • Contribute to establish DZS standards as it relates to new construction and project execution that can be transferred to other areas of the zoo.
