The Maintenance Specialist IV, Electrician Assistant performs highly advanced (senior-level) restoration, renovation, building maintenance and construction work in a designated skilled trade. Work involves renovation, restoration, alteration, making inspections, adjustments, installations, maintaining and repairing buildings, utility systems, and stationary equipment, dependent on the trade and operating motorized equipment, requisitioning material and supplies; and maintaining records. Process paperwork related to work orders, projects and material requisitions. Assists a licensed electrician in performing specialty electrical work involving the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical equipment and circuits at the facility.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of electronics, boilers, painting, plastering and carpentry; of building materials, plumbing and electrical fixtures; welding procedures, HVAC, sanitation, and refrigeration.
  • Knowledge of the repair, maintenance, and operations of buildings, building systems and grounds
  • Knowledge of industrial safety, fire and safety regulations.
  • Skill in the use of hand tools, power tools, and test equipment
  • Skill in preventative maintenance and inspections of buildings and building systems.
  • Ability to perform maintenance, to follow instructions, estimate materials; to apply proper methods, techniques and procedures in the maintenance and repair of buildings, building and utility systems.
  • Ability to interpret drawings, schematics, or sketches.
  • Ability to organize preventive maintenance programs.
  • Ability to supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to work independently or with a team.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with co-workers and other facility staff.
  • Ability to solve problems, make decisions and use good judgment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally or in writing with other members of the maintenance and facility team.
  • Position may be required to drive and require a valid Driver's License and eligible driving record based on HHSC Fleet Management policy. Applicants with an out-of-state driver's license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure. Must possess valid TX driver's license or obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date.
  • Experience in construction, maintenance, and repair work.
  • Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent, supplemented by vocational training in a designated trade, is generally preferred.
  • Experience and education may be substituted for one another.
  • Relevant work experience such as masonry, carpentry, painting, performing repairs, renovations or routine preventative maintenance to buildings or residential homes.
  • Minimum of 1 year of work assisting an electrician or performing electric work.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in a maintenance program in a residential setting or maintaining multiple building is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned. May serve in an on-call status on a rotating schedule as required to meet operational needs of the facility.
  • Performs inspections, adjustments, maintenance and repair work in accordance with recognized codes and standards on building systems for various trades such as plumbing, HVAC, welding, carpentry, painting and electrical, to ensure proper maintenance and repair. Demonstrates the use of hand tools and/or equipment while performing repairs or inspections. Evaluates work to be performed and determines the best method for performing maintenance and repair work.
  • Performs repairs and renovations to modernize a building, building system or adapt it to new uses. Designs projects to conform to applicable codes and standards. Identifies necessary information such as time and physical location. Identifies necessary materials and assembly details. Ensures that the necessary tools and manpower are available to perform the work. Makes in-process inspections to ensure the job is being done properly.
  • Selects appropriate material to replace and repair building or building systems. Recognizes failures in the operation of the equipment. Correctly identifies the cause of the system or equipment failure and identifies the necessary corrective action.
  • Acts as a lead worker on construction, maintenance or repair projects. Establishes work schedules, assigns appropriate staff, and oversees repairs or renovations needed.
  • Assists a licensed electrician in the maintenance and repair of electrical equipment and circuits. Assists with calculating electrical loads, wire sizes, and lengths. Assists with mounting motors, transformers, and lighting fixtures into position and completing circuits per diagram specifications. Assists with isolating defects in wiring, circuit breakers, fuses, switches, sockets and other elements and replaces faulty parts and elements. Assists with performing inspections, adjustments, maintenance and repair work in accordance with recognized codes and standards for electrical work to ensure proper maintenance and repair. Competently and safely uses job-specific equipment.
  • Maintains safe and uninterrupted services to campus operations and programs systems. Recognizes improper operation and deterioration of the system. Establishes a need for repairs and adjustments.
  • Uses hand tools, power tools, and tests safety equipment as necessary.
  • Accurately processes paperwork and maintains records on work orders, projects and material requisitions.
  • May operate machinery such as backhoes, forklifts, etc. as necessary. Demonstrates the use of machinery as needed.
  • May train others on the proper procedures and methods for repairs or inspections. Maintains training records for staff
  • Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.
