About The Position

The district is seeking an experienced individual to join our Maintenance Department. The ideal candidate will have significant experience in either HVAC or Plumbing, or both. The Maintenance worker maintains school buildings and grounds in top condition to ensure full and productive use of the district facilities. To accomplish these tasks the Maintenance worker must work closely with the staff and administration of the Garfield School District.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Boiler Fireman's Black Seal License.
  • Proficiency with operating electrical tools/equipment.
  • Experience in building and grounds operations.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to use computers and software for maintenance and inventory.
  • Ability to read and write in English.
  • Ability to read chemical labels and follow material safety data sheets.
  • Ability to initiate and complete work orders.
  • Valid NJ Driver's License and ability to qualify under the district's insurance carrier.
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 75 pounds.
  • Eligible for employment in the United States.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain school buildings and grounds in top condition to ensure full and productive use of district facilities.
  • Perform minor repairs and adjustments to electrical system.
  • Repair or replace light fixtures, including ballasts and sockets, light switches, and duplex outlets.
  • Run new electrical services from existing power sources for modification of, or addition to existing school rooms.
  • Fabricate and install various metal parts using various methods of assembling.
  • Repair or replace mechanical components such as panic bolts, door locks, door closures, ventilators, radiators, and motor vents.
  • Assist in minor repairs to motor vehicle equipment and maintenance and grounds equipment.
  • Perform various carpentry tasks such as repairing wood floors, bleachers, furniture, and benches.
  • Perform repairs and replacements of pipe fittings and plumbing faucets.
  • Repair and replace lavatory and shower room accessories.
  • Prepare surfaces for painting by scraping, caulking, cutting out plastic cracks, patching, and masking.
  • Reglaze/caulk and reseal outside joints around windows and door frames.
  • Perform minor repairs to public address systems and intercom systems.
  • Fabricate and install forms and pour concrete for patching or new construction installations.
  • Assist in snow removal and operate a plow.
  • Maintain balance on a ladder.
  • Ensure that all activities conform to district guidelines and policies.
  • Communicate effectively with all members of the school district and community.
  • React to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned.
  • Appropriately operate all equipment and machinery necessary.
  • Complete required trainings yearly.
  • Other responsibilities and duties as directed by the Director and Assistant Director of Facilities.
