UCAR is excited to announce the job opening for the Maintenance Operations Manager. This position is responsible for managing all key facilities services activities (Maintenance, Grounds, Custodial) for 13 distributed UCAR and Federally owned sites totaling approximately 1.1 million sq. ft. Provides on-demand repair and preventive maintenance of UCAR/NCAR facilities and infrastructure. Directs trade, administrative, and technical staff. Oversees budgets and supports capital improvement functions.

  • Schedules and coordinates preventive maintenance, repairs, and modifications across 13 UCAR/NSF NCAR sites.
  • Develops and maintains preventive maintenance programs and procedures for buildings and grounds.
  • Directs activities of service contractors retained under purchase orders and service agreements.
  • Prepares and administers annual operating budgets; monitors expenditures.
  • Collaborates with FM Engineering Project Managers on infrastructure improvement.
  • Approves purchases for maintenance operations.
  • Supervises crafts personnel and contract labor for scheduled and on-demand work requests.
  • Ensures compliance with safety protocols in collaboration with the Health Environment & Safety Services (HESS) Team.
  • Maintains clean, organized Maintenance-assigned spaces that pass safety inspections and audits.
  • Collaborates with FM’s Sustainability department to advance UCAR's energy efficiency, carbon reduction, and sustainability goals.
  • Minimum eight years of experience in maintenance, construction, industrial, or energy environments, including a minimum of 3-5 years of leadership experience.
  • Strong leadership and supervisory experience (minimum 5 years).
  • Expertise in supervising plant maintenance, operations, and craft workers.
  • Demonstrated ability to build high-functioning, interdisciplinary facility operations teams.
  • Advanced or Proficient skill in budget development and monitoring.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully collaborate with facility security and technical security groups.
  • Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and Building Automation Systems (BAS) systems.
  • Advanced knowledge of Association of Physical Plant Administrators (APPA) cleaning standards and preventive maintenance programs.
  • Ability to read/interpret engineering and construction plans.
  • Skill in performing life cycle analysis for infrastructure systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage task specific contracted or temporary labor.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead small and medium sized infrastructure improvement projects.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including, strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills (Google Suite, Microsoft Office).
  • Degree in Facilities Management, Engineering, or Business or a related field.
  • Facility Management Professional (FMP) Certification.
  • Experience in Federally Funded Research and Development Centers.
  • Familiarity with construction management.
