About The Position

This position performs skilled maintenance work in the troubleshooting, inspection, repair, and maintenance of buildings, industrial machinery such as pumps, boilers, air conditioning units, compressors, backhoes and tractors. Regularly provides leadership to junior mechanics in the field. Work is performed under minimum supervision requiring knowledge and understanding of the functionality and equipment including various types of chemical equipment in an advanced water/wastewater treatment facility. Individual is expected to identify and remedy problems using independent judgment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED. Technical or trade school preferred.
  • Four years of experience in the maintenance of water/wastewater treatment plants or with similar type of equipment.
  • Proficient in the use of materials, tools, and equipment used in mechanical maintenance or repair of industrial facilities, such as hydraulics, power transmission equipment, pump maintenance, pipe fitting, pneumatics, lubrication and shaft alignment techniques.
  • Valid Texas driver's license.
  • Must possess considerable knowledge of mechanics, plumbing, welding, hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Knowledge of basic math and measurement principles.
  • Basic computer skills to enter and maintain information in computerized maintenance management system.
  • Ability to comprehend, carry out and administer written and oral instruction.
  • Ability to read operation and maintenance manuals, schematics, blueprints and safety data sheets.
  • This position requires passing a physical and physical ability assessment specific to this position.

Nice To Haves

  • Heavy equipment operation and supervisory experience is a plus.
  • Commercial driver’s license preferred dependent on assignment.

Responsibilities

  • Leads, coordinates, monitors and performs routine preventive and corrective maintenance and repair to existing buildings, machinery and equipment. Work may be performed on such process equipment such as large centrifugal pumps, raw water pumps, mixing equipment, conveying systems and screening equipment, line shaft pumps, hydraulic and pneumatic systems both high and low pressure systems, blowers and elevated storage tank equipment, and basic electrical duties such as wiring and unwiring motors and mixers up to 480 volts. Performs trim and rough carpentry, painting, plumbing, pipe fitting and welding.
  • Performs general maintenance to grounds including mowing, edging, weed eating, digging, and operation of related equipment such as forklifts, backhoes, sewer cleaning trucks, portable crane trucks, and related equipment. May perform general housekeeping and a wide variety of janitorial services as required/directed.
  • Lays out work and plans jobs from established schedules and work orders. Ensures proper materials and equipment are at the job site to facilitate a timely and orderly completion of the job.
  • Responsible for the documentation and record keeping for a group of subordinate employees. Responsible for maintaining thorough and complete process records and logs. Develops the knowledge, skills and abilities of subordinate employees to effectively utilize computer applications and software, including, but not limited to; Microsoft Office business applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, etc.), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), computerized maintenance management system or enterprise software, and SharePoint or other common cloud based file sharing services.
  • Utilizes blueprints, schematics, O&M manuals, technical publications, and manufacturer's specifications for the purpose of maintaining Authority equipment, machines and vehicles.
  • Observes all safety guidelines and security measures as established by the Authority. Provides operational, technical and safety training to more junior maintenance mechanics.
  • Ability to convey and receive information in written and verbal form to others. Maintains good communication with supervisors,co-workers and other departments.
  • Performs duties of Chief Maintenance Mechanic as required.
  • May be responsible for responding to various emergency situations, including after-hours, as directed by supervisor.
  • May be required to participate in an emergency on call program.
  • Dependent on assignment may be required to use an Air Respirator/SCBA.
  • Assists in the safe handling and unloading of chemicals in the plant.
  • Employees assigned to this position are classified as essential personnel. Essential personnel are required to report to work when scheduled during departmental and/or emergency situations including, but not limited to, extended periods of inclement weather when travel may be difficult. This position is essential because in the absence of sufficient personnel, the plant cannot operate safely.
