The Maintenance Mechanic I/II is responsible for the overall material condition of assigned building(s) and immediate surroundings. The mechanic will perform routine and preventive maintenance repairs, initiate and respond to work orders to ensure that the assigned building(s) are in good repair. The mechanic will support learning programs by maintaining furniture inventories at designated numbers and in good repair. The mechanic will initiate work orders for the custodial staff to maintain facility cleanliness at or above acceptable standards.

  • Maintain building heating and cooling equipment, including preventative maintenance and repair of pumps, VAVs, FCUs, controls, air handlers, etc.
  • Perform lighting and building condition inspections, and report the results in accordance with current Facilities policies and procedures.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on designated equipment in accordance with current schedules.
  • Perform all HVAC, plumbing, carpentry, electrical, flooring, suspended ceilings, roofing and masonry work in accordance with recommended practices in current technical manuals and in accordance with all applicable safety and building codes.
  • Utilize all appropriate personal protective equipment necessary to perform duties in a safe manner.
  • Establish a constant watch on exterior, classroom, office and common area lighting and replace bulbs and/or ballasts as they fail.
  • Check exterior light timers and reset as necessary. Assure all clocks within assigned buildings maintain correct time.
  • Monitor the operation of building elevators and lifts and initiate trouble calls for problems or concerns.
  • Accompany contractors performing services in assigned area to ensure quality of work and adherence to college policies and procedures, and to enhance knowledge of area's systems and equipment.
  • Report as directed during college closed periods, due to inclement weather, to assist with snow removal or storm damage repair.
  • Maintain and repair dry wall partitions, including patching, spackling, sanding and painting in assigned area.
  • Maintain mechanical and electrical rooms in a clean/orderly manner.
  • Maintain all classroom and office furniture and fixtures in good repair. Generate requests for replacement furniture.
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Level I: Minimum of 1 year of general maintenance experience required.
  • Level II: Minimum of 3 years of general maintenance experience required.
  • Demonstrated abilities in areas of electrical, electronics, plumbing carpentry or HVAC/R skills.
  • Proficient oral, written and electronic communication skills.
  • Proven record of attendance and reliability.
  • Ability to deal effectively and tactfully with students, staff, faculty and the public.
  • Ability to work safely and reliably with minimum of supervision.
