About The Position

At St. Tammany Health System, the Maintenance Mechanic I - HVAC plays a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of facility and equipment maintenance at the hospital's main campus and its off-site facilities. This position is responsible for a variety of maintenance tasks that are essential for the safety and functionality of the healthcare environment. The mechanic will perform inspections of electrical and mechanical equipment to detect malfunctions, clean various components such as coils and motors, and install electrical circuits and piping for water and drain lines. A sound knowledge of reading and utilizing blueprints is necessary to effectively carry out these tasks. In addition to routine maintenance, the mechanic will respond to maintenance calls for issues such as blocked drain lines, malfunctioning ice machines, and HVAC units. Responsibilities also include changing oil in compressors, replacing air filters in HVAC units, and cleaning cooling towers. The mechanic will inspect and repair wheelchairs, beds, and furniture, ensuring compliance with Life Safety Codes and departmental policies. Efficient time management and accurate documentation of tasks are essential components of this role. The mechanic will also assist Mechanic II's when requested, demonstrating teamwork and collaboration within the maintenance department. The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent, with a preference for candidates who have three years of experience in two or more building crafts, such as plumbing, commercial electric work, refrigeration, and air conditioning. Candidates must obtain Type Level I and II refrigerant transition and recovery certification within six months of hire. A valid state-issued driver's license and proof of automobile insurance are also required, as the role involves driving a hospital-owned vehicle or a personal vehicle to perform job duties.
