About The Position

The Maintenance Manager/Field Operations position at the Florida Department of Transportation involves planning and directing routine maintenance activities on the state highway system, including bridges, in accordance with Department policies, procedures, guidelines, specifications, and manuals. Requirements

  • Knowledge of Maintenance Rating Program.

  • Knowledge of Safety Practices and Procedures.
  • Skills in the use of the Maintenance Management System Manual.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, design standards, and manuals.
  • Ability to organize and conduct meetings.
  • Ability to plan, direct, and coordinate work assignments.
  • Ability to supervise effectively, determine work priorities, and assign work tasks.
  • A valid class 'E' driver's license.
  • Must obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) – Advanced Level within one year.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise employees in the maintenance crew subsection, including communication, motivation, training, and evaluation.
  • Plan and direct workloads, deadlines, work objectives, and time utilization with subordinate staff.
  • Provide direction and ensure that all subordinates receive training and instruction in methods and techniques necessary to safely perform their assigned tasks.
  • Provide technical assistance on repair methods and practices to highway maintenance field crews.
  • Analyze work needs and provide engineering judgment when developing solutions to resolve issues.
  • Schedule and plan maintenance activities as identified in surveys, complaints, and work orders.
  • Prepare reports on all field operations and ensure compliance and completeness of inspections.
  • Investigate incidents and personal injuries involving subordinate staff.
  • Monitor and review all work performed by in-house maintenance staff.
  • Investigate and respond to complaints, maintaining frequent contact with the public.
  • Attend meetings and training sessions to improve maintenance operations.
  • Serve as liaison to consulting engineers and contractors, city, county, and other state agencies.
  • Monitor the state highway system to determine work objectives, priorities, and effectiveness.
  • Manage the use of Department of Correction inmates as needed.
  • Analyze weekly and quarterly reports for production comparison.
  • Ensure traffic control in Department work zones is in accordance with standards.
  • Investigate and respond to accidents involving FDOT bridges and facilities.
  • Prepare final cost affidavits and make proper distributions.
  • Respond to after-hours emergency situations.
  • Participate in pre-construction conferences for all contract projects.
  • Assist construction personnel in identifying future maintenance concerns.
