Carries through to completion with minimum supervision the machining and fitting of all kinds of metal parts, tools, and machines, including hydraulics and pneumatics. Lays out work from blueprints, sketches, schematics, and other written specifications. Sets up and operates all available machines and machine tools and performs progressive machining operations on work involving very close tolerances or unusual requirements. Determines operation sequences. Uses skillfully all machinists’ hand tools and determines properties of metals. Able to diagnose mechanical equipment failures such as gear box and leadscrew related failures, determine corrective action and execute repairs. Must be able to use measuring instruments typical of the trade to determine dimensions and quality of work performed. Requires experience, trade skill and knowledge of machine shop practice including knowledge of conventional and CNC machine tool functionality. May be acquired by two years of machine shop school education supplemented by ten thousand (10,000) hours of applied machine shop and maintenance trades experience. Performs other duties as designated by supervisor, in the same salary grade or below. If desired by the employee and deemed beneficial by the Company, any employee in this classification may, upon certification, obtain a forklift license and be permitted to operate a gas or electric powered forklift truck to move material within their department and classification.
