About The Position

The Role The Maintenance Lead – Battery Cell Development Center is a hands-on role focused on maintenance and uptime of production equipment and ancillary systems at GM’s Ancker-Johnson Battery Cell Development Center (BCDC). The role plans and coordinates maintenance activities, working closely with Technical Operations Specialists, engineering, and operations to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of advanced battery cell manufacturing equipment and supporting utilities in a fast-paced, non–steady-state environment.

Requirements

  • Technical degree, completed apprenticeship, or equivalent experience in industrial maintenance (mechanical, electrical, mechatronics, or related field).
  • Significant experience as a maintenance or technical operations specialist in manufacturing, pilot, or development environments.
  • Strong hands-on skills in troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and/or controls systems including robotics, vision systems, and automation diagnostics.
  • Experience reading and interpreting technical drawings, schematics, and equipment documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate work across multiple technicians, assets, and priorities.
  • Ability to wear required PPE and work in a development lab / manufacturing environment, including off-shifts, weekends, or holidays as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of lithium‑ion cell manufacturing processes (electrode, assembly, formation).
  • Experience in development, pilot, or startup environments.
  • Experience using Maximo and maintenance planning tools.
  • Background in reliability-centered maintenance (RCM), TPM, or similar methodologies.

Responsibilities

  • Champion a strong safety culture aligned with GM and regulatory requirements (e.g., OSHA, lockout/tagout, hazardous energy, DG where applicable).
  • Ensure maintenance activities follow safe work practices, permits; support audits and incident investigations.
  • Coordinate and dispatch daily maintenance work (preventive, predictive, and corrective) across cell manufacturing assets (e.g., mixing, coating, calendering, assembly, formation, test, utilities).
  • Maintain and optimize Preventative and Predictive Maintenance plans, spare parts strategy, and work instructions to support uptime and development needs.
  • Review work orders, prioritize based on safety, impact, and schedule, and ensure timely closure with quality documentation.
  • Support root-cause analysis and corrective actions for recurring equipment issues.
  • Provide first-level technical guidance to maintenance technicians and Technical Operations Specialists on mechanical, electrical, controls, and robotics issues.
  • Support equipment commissioning, upgrades, and trials in partnership with engineering and suppliers.
  • Promote standard methods, troubleshooting guides, and best practices across shifts.
  • Use maintenance management systems (Maximo) to manage work orders, downtime, and asset history.
  • Track and help deliver KPIs such as uptime, MTTR/MTBF, response time, and maintenance backlog.
  • Ensure accurate documentation of changes, repairs, and settings to support traceability and repeatability.
  • Work closely with Operations, Engineering, Quality, central EHS teams, and Facilities to plan maintenance around builds and trials.
  • Identify and implement improvements that reduce unplanned downtime, improve maintainability, and enhance safety.
  • Support GMS and continuous-improvement activities (e.g., problem-solving, standard work, visual management).
