About The Position

The Port of Everett, located on Port Gardner Bay at the mouth of the Snohomish River, was formed by the citizens of Everett in 1918 to create economic opportunities and protect the waterfront for the community. The Port has a long history of providing marine-related services and appropriate public access to the waterfront. The Port strives to bring quality jobs, business, and tourism opportunities to its local and surrounding communities, and is committed to enhancing, restoring and preserving the overall environmental health of our waterfront through environmental remediation, pollution prevention and resiliency planning. The Port of Everett operates three lines of business: 1) international shipping terminals; 2) marina facilities; and 3) real estate development. The Port operates eight shipping berths situated on approximately 125 acres of land, and specializes in handling high-value, conventional and over dimensional cargoes in support of the aerospace, military, construction, manufacturing, agriculture, energy and forest products industries. The Port of Everett runs the largest public marina on the West Coast with more than 2,300 recreational boating slips and a 13-lane public boat launch facility. On the real estate side, the Port owns 3,300 acres of property, including Jetty Island, and works to return environmentally damaged property to productive use, restoring economic prosperity to the waterfront. The Port’s properties also provide numerous public access and recreational opportunities for area residents and visitors to enjoy, supporting a vibrant, livable and balanced waterfront that generates economic and recreational opportunities. Through its operations, the Port supports nearly 40,000 jobs and contributes $433 million to state and local taxes. The Maintenance Helper performs various tasks and/or assists journeymen with tasks related to the maintenance and operation of the marina facilities. As a representative of the Port, the Marina Helper is expected to deliver excellent service for marina slip holders and visitors. Weekend shifts may be included. This position does not provide automatic advancement to a maintenance journeyman or other ILWU positions.

Requirements

  • Basic understanding, methods, practices and tools common to various construction trades, including carpenter, electrician, plumber, concrete finisher and painter
  • Ability to operate and use basic landscaping and maintenance tools
  • Demonstrate expertise specific to their profession and maintain appropriate licensing/certification
  • Ability to effectively communicate with customers, clients and coworkers
  • Ability to perform basic to intermediate mathematical functions.
  • Ability to deal with problems requiring initiative and good judgement
  • Display the diplomacy necessary to address sensitive issues or complaints—both public and private
  • Possess effective conflict resolution and personal negotiation skills
  • Exhibit high ethical standards in the execution of position responsibilities
  • Cultivate and contribute to a dynamic, team-oriented work environment by being responsive, timely, respectful and knowledgeable
  • Communicate effectively in English, including the ability to read, write, analyze and interpret complex documents and other written material
  • Have the ability to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and maintain insurability under the Port’s auto insurance plan
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)

Nice To Haves

  • Six (6) months related work or volunteer experience
  • Related work experience in janitorial, groundskeeping, light maintenance and working with the public is desirable

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute fees and percentages

Responsibilities

  • Carry out all duties listed below with a focus on high service quality for the department and support of marina slip holders and visitors
  • Perform general groundskeeping of Port property, including sweeping, raking, shoveling, painting, power washing, garbage disposal, and recycling
  • Perform landscape maintenance throughout Port’s property and walking trails, including mowing, trimming, weeding and raking. Complete minor repairs as directed
  • Perform janitorial work throughout the Port marina facilities on an as-needed basis.
  • Collaborate effectively with coworkers to complete daily maintenance tasks and support overall facility operations
  • Act as the Port’s agent at the marina fuel dock
  • Assist customers with securing and fueling of vessels.
  • Collect all monies associated with fuel dock sales and balance the fuel dock till daily.
  • Maintain bulk fuel and oil products inventories on a daily and monthly basis
  • Report sales and inventory balances to the Marina Office on a daily basis
  • Assist in resolving any fuel inventory or sales discrepancies
  • Operate equipment such as Port Vehicles, rolling stock and other equipment for maintenance and landscaping purposes
  • Assist with storm water testing as needed
  • Demonstrate a willingness to learn new skills, follow instructions and adapt to changing priorities or work environments
  • Respond positively to customers and visitors, answering questions and handling requests that fall within the scope of the position's responsibilities. Refer other requests and issues to appropriate personnel
  • Represent the Port with professionalism and respect in all interactions, contributing to a welcoming and safe environment
  • Observe all company, health, safety and environmental rules, ensuring that you are provided with full information on your area specific safety issues, all unique hazards are identified, and you are provided with the proper equipment to carry out your job in a safe manner
  • Maintain the work area to a high standard of housekeeping and low incidence of physical hazards.
  • Reports all incidents and accidents promptly to Supervisor or Manager
  • Adhere to all company policies, procedures, employee handbook guidelines, and the provisions outlined in the respective Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), ensuring consistency, fairness, and compliance in daily operations
  • Participates in Port events to support organizational engagement and culture
  • Performs other duties and project assignments as directed to meet operational needs
