About The Position

This position's responsibilities are to perform a wide variety of general maintenance and repairs to district facilities and equipment. Responsibilities include minor wiring, electrical equipment and system repairs, plumbing fixture and pipe installation and repair, welding, painting, window glazing, carpentry, and a variety of other general maintenance repairs under the direction of appropriate maintenance technicians and within the scope of the position. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Depending upon the individual assignment, the General Maintenance Worker may perform all or a combination of the following: 1. Responds to problems concerning roof leaks; performs emergency roofing repairs. 2. Modifies, maintains and minor repairs of interior wiring and cables, connections for electrical machines, switches and controls, buzzer and bell circuits. 3. Adjusts, maintains and repairs equipment and instruments such as pumps, clocks, lamps, stoves, timers, fans, and related hardware. May also repair/service commercial kitchen and laundry equipment. 4. Performs carpentry tasks to construct, repair and maintain district facilities. May work in a team situation involving construction projects requiring more than one person. Constructs a variety of cabinets, shelves, and computer tables; repairs furniture. 5. Minor installation or repair of plumbing systems and performs routine maintenance on existing systems, including sewer lines and plumbing stations. Responds to custodial requests for plumbing assistance; removes major plugs from toilets, sinks and fountains. Replaces faucets, fixtures, lavatories, sinks and plumbing valves. 6. Installs and repairs locks and hardware; keys new locks; repairs and installs linoleum, tile, gutters and downspouts. 7. Prepares surfaces for welding; uses arc and acetylene welding and burning equipment. 8. Performs routine repairs and maintenance on steam heating systems, piping, traps, valves and condensation pumps. Assists technicians with maintaining gas and electrical heating systems. Performs preventative maintenance tasks. 9. Mixes paints and allied products; matches colors, applies undercoats and finish coats; paints interior and exterior surfaces of buildings and other structures by means of brush, roller or spray equipment; erects and removes portable scaffolding; cleans brushes, containers, spray guns and other equipment. 10. Performs glazing, paperhanging, stencil lettering and repairing of plaster, cement and marble; repairs floors, screens, windows, sashes, doors, furniture, fixtures, stairs, cupboards and roofs. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, Continued 11. Performs minor repairs and routine maintenance on heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems (HVAC), including refrigeration systems and freezers. 12. Performs minor repairs on well pumps and controls, pressure tanks, sewage system pumps and controls and related equipment. OTHER FUNCTIONS 13. May assist in training new team members. 14. Cleans and maintains safe working shop area including assigned vehicle. 15. May maintain a variety of records, files, and technical manuals. 16. May serve on various district committees and;/or departmental work teams. Models appropriate and cooperative behavior, including protecting confidential information, consistent with district ethical guidelines. 17. Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.

Requirements

  • Education, training, skills, and experience necessary to carry out the assignment with experience in maintenance and repair including a wide range of construction skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of construction trades, including carpentry, plumbing, painting, glazing, locksmithing, welding, general electrical and other skills.
  • Skill in the use of tools and equipment of the trades.
  • Ability to identify and correct problems and make minor technical repairs.
  • Knowledge of maintenance safety procedures, including lifting techniques.
  • Skill in making repairs to walls, floors and fixtures.
  • Ability to make repairs in a cost effective manner.
  • Ability to work independently with a minimum of supervision.
  • Ability to identify and correct minor problems with heating and refrigeration systems.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of others.
  • Valid Washington state driver's license and a good driving record.
  • Certification as an asbestos worker may be required.
  • Washington State Refrigerant Recovery Certification may be required.
