About The Position

The Maintenance Engineer at SEARHC is a critical role responsible for the comprehensive upkeep and operational integrity of the organization's physical structures, building systems, and associated equipment. This position encompasses a wide range of maintenance duties, including plumbing, pipefitting, mechanical repairs, and minor electrical work, all aimed at ensuring facilities remain in good repair. The engineer operates and maintains all facility-related equipment, systems, and structures, focusing on keeping mechanical systems running safely and at peak performance through regular maintenance, necessary repairs, and adjustments. Beyond routine upkeep, the role also involves new installations and renovation projects. Given SEARHC's mission as a non-profit health consortium serving Southeast Alaska, this position directly impacts the ability to provide healthcare, making it a vital component of facility management. The Maintenance Engineer holds a higher level of responsibility for overall facility operations, including guiding staff and making critical decisions regarding changing system conditions, under the direction of a Facility Manager or Supervisor. The role requires flexibility, including availability for rotating on-call and call-back work, and may involve travel to outlying communities. Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED (preferred).
  • Valid driver’s license and remain insurable under the SEARHC automobile insurance policy.
  • Complete Life Safety 101 course within 90 days of hire.
  • Complete Lockout Tagout online course within 90 days of hire.
  • Complete the eye wash weekly testing competency within 90 days.
  • Safety- 10-hour OSHA Competency completed within 90 days.
  • 6 or more years of experience including a Vocational School Degree, Military training, Facility Maintenance or Internal Maintenance Mechanics III that have completed competencies.
  • Ability to read codes, standards, regulations, construction/mechanical drawings/OEM manuals, and specifications.
  • Ability to make basic math calculations.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, techniques, materials, tools, equipment, layouts and set-ups used in plumbing and pipefitting.
  • Knowledge of fire suppression systems and boiler systems.
  • Working knowledge of all pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations.
  • Experience with computerized Direct Digital Controls (DDC) of facility heating, cooling and ventilation equipment.
  • Ability to perform repairs and installations on drywall, cabinets, countertops, woodworking etc.
  • Skills in troubleshooting and repair of healthcare mechanical systems.
  • Skills in mechanical system design and installation.
  • Skills in verbal and written communication that includes emailing or texting.
  • Skills in HVAC fundamentals and mechanical heating systems.
  • Ability to perform all the essential duties related to the position’s responsibility with limited direction and oversight.
  • Ability to use and maintain all tools, equipment and vehicles used during routine performance of duties.
  • Ability to maintain professional growth and development through in-service training, seminars, and workshops.
  • Ability to operate and maintain small engines, landscaping equipment, chainsaws, snowblowers and hydraulic equipment.
  • Ability to walk extensively on uneven terrain or slippery surfaces, work while bending, stooping, or reaching, and lift 50 lbs.
  • Ability to safely work on equipment in unstable conditions, climb in and out of dump trucks, bob cats, loaders, forklifts, and pick-up trucks.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Products including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to travel as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in other trades such as welding, HVAC, and electrical troubleshooting.
  • Backflow preventors Inspection license.

Responsibilities

  • Perform plumbing, pipefitting, mechanical repairs, and minor electrical work to maintain physical structures and building systems.
  • Operate and maintain all facility-related equipment, systems, and structures.
  • Ensure mechanical systems operate safely and at peak performance through maintenance, repairs, and adjustments.
  • Execute new installations and renovation work.
  • Be available for rotating on-call and call-back work.
  • Travel to outlying communities to perform work as needed.
  • Provide staff with guidance and assistance relevant to their program.
  • Make critical decisions regarding changing systems conditions with direction from Facility Manager/Facility Supervisor.
  • Install, inspect, fabricate, maintain, and repair standard plumbing systems and equipment concerned with water, gas, oil, sewage, fire control, steam and refrigeration.
  • Move and install water heaters and plumbing fixtures.
  • Inspect, test, and perform preventive maintenance on equipment and systems such as boilers, air handling equipment, compressors, pumps, chillers and motors.
  • Maintain, inspect, diagnose, and make emergency repairs to such systems and equipment while complying with applicable building codes.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, maps, schematic wiring diagrams, and specifications.
  • Prepare estimates for room remodels that include a rough sketch of the work to be completed.
  • Perform urgent corrective and routine repairs of the electrical, mechanical, heating, cooling, plumbing, and refrigeration systems.
  • Maintain parking lots and entrances including snow plowing, applying non-slip materials during icy conditions, landscaping, removal of litter/debris and organic material (weeds), lawn care, sign maintenance and stripe painting as needed.
  • Maintain records of all inspections, preventive maintenance, and repairs performed on any equipment or system.
  • Maintain, inspect, and document all sprinkler systems throughout SEARHC facilities.
  • Purchase parts, supplies, and equipment needed for normal routine day-to-day maintenance in a cost-effective manner.
  • Operate generators to maintain electrical power in case of power failure.
  • Operate, monitor, repair, and maintain boilers.
  • Operate fuel and water supply systems.
  • Maintain heating plant log.
  • Ensure proper distribution of heat to all systems.
  • Check all boiler parts for wear.
  • Perform adjustments and minor repairs to boilers.
  • Make recommendations and arrangements for major boiler repairs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
