About The Position

Under general supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor and the Division Manager to perform a variety of technical and skilled work involved in the installation, maintenance, preventive maintenance, and repair of all electrical wiring, equipment, and associated systems.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of:
  • Electrical installations such as lighting 110/277, light ballast installation, electrical plug and wall switch installation and replacement.
  • Basic troubleshooting methods for electrical circuits.
  • Maintenance Electrician II
  • Conduits, wires, relays, pull boxes, switch boards, and switches required in making additions, extensions, or alterations in electrical systems.
  • Diagnostic malfunctions and how to resolve them.
  • Occupational hazards of the trade and safety precautions for working with complicated high voltage wiring and equipment, from 12 volts to 480 volts AC.
  • Skill to:
  • Work with and around low to high voltage; 12-volt DC up to 3 phase 480 volt AC.
  • Learn to install, troubleshoot, repair and service a variety of municipal locations including airport runway controls and lighting; water treatment plants; pumping plants; sewer plants and lift stations; public parks and softball fields, as well as all other City facilities and electrical equipment.
  • Prepare, maintain, and submit records and reports.
  • Operate a variety of electrical meters, hand tools, and other equipment.
  • Ability to:
  • Operate and use an aerial bucket truck from 35 feet to 65 feet, and up to 100 feet.
  • Safely climb ladders from 6 to 32 feet.
  • Install conduits, wires, relays, pull boxes, switch boards, and switches required in making additions, extensions, or alterations to electrical systems.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, schematics and diagrams.
  • Install, maintain, and repair parking area lighting and sports field lighting components.
  • Operate a desktop PC and use related software.
  • Communicate and provide excellent customer service to customers.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, both internally and externally.

  • Maintenance Electrician II
  • Lead and manage a team in a manner that accomplishes the Division’s mission and treats team members with dignity, courtesy, and respect.
  • Maintenance Electrician I
  • One (1) year of previous experience in electrical work is preferred.
  • One (1) year of work experience as an electrical apprentice is preferred.
  • Apprentice, Journeyman and/or Master’s License, including certificate of course completion in electrical fields is required.
  • Texas driver’s license, the ability to obtain one within ninety (90) days of employment, or a military waiver is required.
  • A State Electrical License with the TDLR is required.
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Maintenance Electrician II
  • Four (4) years of previous experience in electrical work is preferred.
  • Two (2) years of work experience as an electrical journeyman or master is preferred.
  • Must be available for after-hours and on-call response duty.
  • Must be capable of working independently in the field.
  • Ability to pass the City, State and Federal criminal background check.
  • Exposure to noise, outdoor weather, vibration, confined work spaces, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards.
  • Ability to travel to different work sites.

Responsibilities

  • Maintenance Electrician I
  • Work independently and assist Maintenance Electrician II with routine daily operations and electrical tasks.
  • Install, replace, and repair lighting ballasts, wall receptacles, switches, light bulbs, and fixtures as needed.
  • Read and interpret building drawings to locate power panels and safely reset tripped circuit breakers.
  • Enter, track, and update work orders using a computer and departmental software systems for both completed and in-progress tasks.
  • Install, maintain, and repair parking area lighting systems and components.
  • Review and interpret wiring schematics, wiring diagrams, and architectural drawings to ensure accurate electrical installations and repairs.
  • Perform repairs on lighting poles using a bucket truck, working at heights of up to 100 feet.
  • Install, maintain, and repair electrical components for Water and Sewer Division booster pumps and Solid Waste pumps operating up to 480 volts AC.
  • Troubleshoot, operate, and maintain motor control systems, including variable frequency drives (VFDs).
  • Diagnose and repair a wide variety of electrical equipment throughout the city.
  • Properly size wiring, conduits, and overload protection devices for new electrical circuits.
  • Measure, bend, and install conduit in accordance with electrical codes and project requirements.
  • Perform preventive maintenance (PMs) on city-owned electrical equipment to ensure safe and reliable operation.
  • Operate a City vehicle daily to travel to water treatment plants, pump stations, storage tanks, radio towers, and other city facilities to perform electrical repairs and services.
  • Maintenance Electrician II
  • Oversee the work of the Electrician l as necessary.
