SUMMARY The Maintenance Electrical and Controls Specialist is a hands-on, plant-floor embedded technical expert responsible for advanced electrical/controls troubleshooting, repair execution, and verification of permanent fixes. This role exists to reduce downtime, improve repair quality and repeatability, standardize troubleshooting methods, and elevate team capability through on-the-job coaching. The incumbent is expected to work directly on equipment, support production-critical events in real time, and actively participate in field repairs, preventive maintenance activities executions and restoration activities. The Maintenance Electrical and Controls Specialist exercises independent judgement in diagnosing systemic issues, implementing solutions to optimize operational efficiency and is the plant-floor embedded subject matter expert for electrical maintenance. Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent hands-on industrial controls experience required.
  • 5-10 years as an Electrical technician in a manufacturing environment (or equivalent demonstrated capability).
  • Proven hands-on troubleshooting and repair capability with PLC-based systems (Allen-Bradley preferred), Drives/VFDs and motor controls, MCCs and electrical diagnostics, industrial instrumentation and field device calibration/verification, sensors, encoders, and transducers (installation, troubleshooting, wiring, feedback verification, scaling/interpretation).
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, control drawings, and safety circuits.
  • Proficient with multimeters, clamp meters, oscilloscopes, and similar diagnostic tools.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience installing wiring/conduit, supporting panel work, and executing equipment upgrades as needed.
  • High technical ability and analytical skills required.
  • Ability to operate within a multi-tasking dynamic team environment.
  • Aptitude to learn new design tools to broaden experience.
  • Ability to effectively present information and communicate at all levels.
  • Strong communication skills, builds capability without conflict.

Responsibilities

  • Hands-On Troubleshooting and Breakdown Response Respond in the field to production-critical events and perform hands-on diagnostics and repairs.
  • Troubleshoot and repair electrical, controls, and automation failures involving: PLCs VFDs/AC-DC drives Servo/motion systems and motion controllers Motor controls and MCCs Industrial instrumentation (120V/480V) Sensors, encoders, and transducers (signal integrity, wiring, alignment/mounting, parameter scaling, feedback verification)
  • Apply structured troubleshooting methods to reduce Time-to-Repair (TTR) and return equipment to stable operation.
  • Minimize reliance on contractors by resolving issues in-house whenever feasible.
  • PLCs VFDs/AC-DC drives Servo/motion systems and motion controllers Motor controls and MCCs Industrial instrumentation (120V/480V) Sensors, encoders, and transducers (signal integrity, wiring, alignment/mounting, parameter scaling, feedback verification)
  • Hands-On Repair Execution and Permanent Fix Verification Execute and/or directly support hands-on repair work: wiring, device replacement, panel work, parameter verification, component testing, and functional checks.
  • Replace and validate field devices such as proximity/limit/photoeye sensors, load/pressure/temperature transducers, and encoder feedback devices; verify correct scaling, feedback polarity, and control response as applicable.
  • Verify repairs are correct and confirm the issue is fully resolved prior to turnover.
  • Identify underlying causes (misconfiguration, wiring faults, component failures, workmanship issues) and prevent repeat failures.
  • Standard Work and Documentation (Built from Real Jobs) Create and maintain troubleshooting guides, wiring documentation, and repair best practices based on real plant failures and successful fixes.
  • Standardize electrical troubleshooting and repair methods across shifts to improve consistency and quality.
  • Ensure work aligns with safety requirements and applicable codes/standards as relevant to maintenance work (e.g., NFPA 70 awareness).
  • Reliability and PM Optimization Support (Execution-Focused) Partner with Maintenance & Reliability and Planning/Scheduling to improve PM job plans, task lists, and execution quality for electrical/controls PMs.
  • Identify bad actors, recurring failures, and systemic weaknesses, support corrective actions and RCA implementation.
  • Provide field feedback to improve PM effectiveness and reduce chronic downtime.
  • On-the-Job Coaching (While Working the Job) Coach technicians during live troubleshooting and repairs, teaching structured diagnostics and correct repair methods.
  • Provide short, practical training on electrical safety, PLC troubleshooting, drives/VFDs, test equipment, instrumentation, sensors/encoders/transducers, and reading schematics/safety circuits.
  • Help supervisors identify skill gaps and development needs through direct observation in the field.
  • Coverage and Availability Expectations Serve as an escalation technical resource for nights, weekends, and after-hours events.
  • Provide remote support by phone when feasible.
  • Report to site when required for production-critical failures that cannot be resolved remotely.
