About The Position

The primary purpose of this position is to perform tasks of installation, operation, preventive maintenance, and repair of campus heating, cooling and ventilating control systems, refrigeration monitoring equipment, safety and security equipment including digital access systems, mass communication devices and related systems. This position is also required to give general assistance to other staff as needed to meet school property and program needs. The Maintenance/Construction Technician III performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance, repair, and construction of facilities and grounds at the NC School for the Deaf. This role ensures the safety, functionality, and aesthetic appeal of the campus environment for students, staff, and visitors. This is a full time, 12-month permanent position and works day shift; Monday to Friday.

Requirements

  • Ability to diagnose, repair, and maintain building facilities systems.
  • Experience with troubleshooting issues, replace or repair parts, tune/set equipment parameters.
  • Documented experience performing regular preventive and predictive maintenance on building utilities and structures.
  • Advanced skill in reading and interpreting electrical/electronic schematics, hydraulic and pneumatic diagrams, mechanical blueprints; equipment manuals; and work orders. The ability to use these to take action to perform required maintenance, repair and replacement of equipment and sub-systems.
  • Dexterity in diagnosing building automation issues and make suggestions for improvement.
  • Skill in using hand and power tools, electric meters in performing duties.
  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and Two (2) years of progressive experience in general maintenance operations; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • May require current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations Part 82, Subpart F.

Responsibilities

  • Execute skilled carpentry work, including framing, trim installation, cabinetry repair, and door/window maintenance.
  • Perform basic plumbing tasks such as repairing leaks, unclogging drains, replacing fixtures, and maintaining hot water systems.
  • Conduct electrical troubleshooting and repairs on lighting systems, outlets, switches, and minor appliance wiring, adhering to safety protocols.
  • Perform general maintenance duties including painting, patching walls, floor repair, and ceiling tile replacement.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of hand and power tools safely and effectively.
  • Assist in the planning and execution of small construction and renovation projects, including demolition, framing, and finishing.
  • Inspect facilities regularly to identify and address maintenance needs proactively.
  • Respond to maintenance requests and emergencies in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, materials used, and time spent on tasks.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety regulations, building codes, and school policies.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, colleagues, and school personnel regarding maintenance issues and project updates.
  • May provide guidance or mentorship to less experienced technicians.
  • Comply with agency safety guidelines.
  • Coordinate with and support external repair contractors.
  • Effectively communicate with other facilities maintenance personnel; communicate updates and escalate issues to supervisor.
