About The Position

The NC Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) is the state government agency created to conserve and sustain the state's fish and wildlife resources through research, scientific management, wise use and public input. The NCWRC is the regulatory agency responsible for the enforcement of North Carolina's fishing, hunting, trapping, and boating laws. The agency has an operational budget of approximately $100 million and employs approximately 700 full-time staff and 100 seasonal temporary staff across the state, including wildlife and fisheries biologists and technicians, wildlife law enforcement officers, wildlife educators, communication specialists, and customer service, information technology and administrative professionals. The NCWRC Mission is to conserve North Carolina's wildlife resources and their habitats and provide programs and opportunities that allow hunters, anglers, boaters, and other outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy wildlife-associated recreation. The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is seeking applicants for a Maintenance/Construction Technician II (Boating Technician) for our Engineering/Construction Division. This position will be involved in the construction and maintenance of the Wildlife Resources Commission's boating access areas and other facilities across the state. The Boating Technician operates a variety of equipment, including farm tractors, dozers, excavators, loaders, graders, dump trucks, hauling units, hand tools and power tools used in the construction and maintenance of recreational access facilities. The Boating Technician's duties include the operation of motorboats, barges and specialty equipment required while constructing concrete ramps, wooden docks, bulkheads and breakwaters. The Boating Technician will be responsible for routine office work necessary to document the construction and progress of projects. This position will also be involved in the construction, maintenance and repair of fish hatchery equipment and buildings. Boating Technician work is performed under the general supervision of a boating technician supervisor. A 10 hour/4-day work schedule is associated with this position. This position will require extensive travel, including overnight travel. This position also has statewide responsibilities, with assignments, work and projects across the state. The incumbent in this position may choose between two of our WRC depots, Chinquapin Depot in Wallace, NC or Rhodes Pond Depot in Dunn, NC.

Requirements

  • Experience with construction techniques and practices
  • Experience with operation, maintenance and repair of structures, equipment and machinery
  • Knowledge of preventative maintenance requirements of equipment
  • Experience operating heavy equipment, outboard motors, chainsaws, power winches and other power tools.
  • Experience in carpentry and concrete work
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license is required within 90 days of employment. Candidate must present proof of a valid NC Driver's License and proof of an acceptable driving record.
  • Possession of a North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required within 12 months of employment.
  • Ability to work primarily outdoors, in all kinds of weather conditions
  • Ability to perform manual labor, lifting medium to heavy items weighing up to 50 pounds daily
  • Ability to perform heavy physical tasks for extended periods of time
  • Ability to wear safety equipment and follow established safety regulations and procedures.
  • Pre-employment drug / alcohol testing is required
  • Completion of release form and background statement allowing NCWRC to check with previous employees for the past two years about controlled substances and alcohol testing (if applicable)
  • All offers of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of pre- and post-employment evaluations.
  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and one (1) year of progressive experience in the assigned trade areas; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualification May require current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations Part 82, Subpart F.
