About The Position

The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services provides services that promote and improve agriculture, agribusiness, and forests; protect consumers and businesses; and conserve farmland and natural resources for the prosperity of all North Carolinians. The Department employs approximately 2,000 employees. The Steve Troxler Agricultural Sciences Center (ASC) houses the regulatory laboratories for the Department of Agriculture. The labs consist of the Food & Drug Protection Division Chemistry, Microbiology, and Pesticide Residue labs; the Veterinary Division Animal Disease Diagnostic lab; the Standards Division Weights and Measures lab, and the Standards Division Fuel Quality testing lab. These laboratories form the scientific basis for all regulatory work performed by the Department ensuring consumer protection for human and animal food, commerce, and animal health. The Maintenance Construction Manager I oversees a team of 4 staff and is responsible for all buildings, maintenance, repairs, and renovation projects for the state-of-the art ASC facility and three veterinary laboratories throughout the state in Monroe, Elkin, and Fletcher NC. Continuous operation of the ASC facility is a critical responsibility of the position. Responsibilities include monitoring, troubleshooting, and repairing all operating systems such as chillers, hot water boilers, steam boilers, HVAC, incinerators, plumbing, and electrical. The position ensures all necessary annual preventive maintenance and inspections are scheduled and completed, including any required follow-up actions. The ASC’s systems are controlled by building automation system software. The successful candidate will have experience understanding and managing building automation systems such as Alerton software. Additionally, knowledge of life safety building codes and occupational safety requirements is needed. This position is the key point of contact for the building automation system’s critical alerts and responds to building alerts including after hours and on weekends/holidays to ensure continuous operation of the ASC. This position is also the first point of contact for State Capitol Police in the event of a fire alarm or other building emergency.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of repair, maintenance and construction techniques and the tools, methods, practices, materials and equipment used in the building and mechanical trades.
  • Ability to read schematics and blueprints, sketch or review technical drawings, estimate repair and construction projects, and perform para-professional engineering projects.
  • Ability to train, direct, and supervise subordinates and establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to arrive at the ASC facility within 60 minutes
  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Facilities or Construction Management or related Engineering field from an appropriately accredited institution and four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in construction or facility maintenance including three (3) years of supervisory experience in construction, maintenance and/or repair of buildings and facilities or an equivalent combination of education and experience; or
  • Associate’s degree in Construction Management, Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Technology, Industrial Maintenance Technology, or Mechanical Engineering Technology from an appropriately accredited institution and six (6) years progressive experience in construction or facility maintenance including three (3) years of supervisory experience in construction, maintenance and/or repair of buildings and facilities.
