About The Position

Portledge School, established in 1965, is located on a 63-acre campus on the North Shore of Long Island, approximately 28 miles from NYC. It serves approximately 525 students from PN-12, offering a competitive college preparatory program within an inclusive community. The school aims to foster critical thinking and moral courage for lifelong learning. Portledge is seeking an experienced Grounds Associate to join its Facilities team. This is a full-time, 12-month staff position, working from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, reporting to the Director of Facilities. The role involves developing and executing an athletic field maintenance plan, assisting with various campus maintenance projects such as mail delivery, event setup and breakdown, general repairs, and painting. The associate must also be available for snow removal and other emergencies during inclement weather.

Requirements

  • Minimum of two (2) years experience in field maintenance, groundskeeping, landscaping, facility maintenance
  • Advanced knowledge of and ability to assist with a variety of projects such as sod removal, sod installation, irrigation, repair/adjustments, seeding, aeration, etc.
  • Knowledge of and ability to safely use hand tools that are essential to field maintenance such as rakes, tampers, shovels, and specialized tools such as compactions, testers, soil moisture meters, etc.
  • Ability to operate small equipment that is essential to maintaining a safe and enjoyable playing surface such as weed whackers, mowers, and edgers
  • Knowledge of and ability to safely operate large equipment such as motorized utility vehicles, tractors, skid steers and corresponding attachments and implements routinely used to assist in cultural practices and field renovations
  • Ability and willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs
  • Self motivated, dependable and detail oriented
  • Valid Driver’s license
  • Available to work occasional weekends and evenings

Responsibilities

  • Develop an athletic field maintenance plan ensuring all fields are in top shape
  • Assist with maintenance-related projects on campus including mail delivery
  • Set up and breakdown of events
  • Perform general repair and maintenance
  • Perform painting tasks
  • Be available during inclement weather for snow removal and other emergencies as necessary
  • Mow, trim, weed grounds, and maintain walking paths
  • Clean and maintain tennis courts and common outdoor spaces
  • Perform seasonal landscaping tasks including planting, mulching, snow removal and leaf removal
  • Assist with setup and takedown for outdoor events
  • Snow/ice preparedness and removal - may be outside of general working hours
  • Assist with school repairs and event setups as required by Director of Facilities including but not limited to painting, fixture replacements, carpentry
  • Assist with basic plumbing and electrical tasks under supervision
  • Monitor and report building maintenance issues or hazards
  • Maintain and organize storage and utility areas
  • Maintain common indoor areas
  • Assist with moving furniture, setting up for indoor events
  • Work in all areas of facilities repair and maintenance as assigned
  • Ensures that all safety concerns are communicated with urgency and that steps are taken to protect the community from the concern
