About The Position

The Maintenance Assistant position at the Department of Environmental Conservation involves operating heavy and light equipment, performing maintenance tasks, and assisting with various construction trades. This is a full-time, temporary role based in Painted Post, NY, with a work schedule from Tuesday to Friday, 6 AM to 4:30 PM. The position is seasonal with an anticipated end date of March 31, 2026, subject to program needs and funding. The role requires physical capability to lift and move objects up to 80 pounds and work in adverse weather conditions.

Requirements

  • Two years of full-time experience in maintenance or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson.
  • Completion of an appropriate two-year technical school course or equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Possession of a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.

Nice To Haves

  • Possession of a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy equipment such as trucks, tractors, bulldozers, loaders, etc.
  • Operate light equipment such as power mowers, chain saws, drills, power saws, etc.
  • Perform a variety of tasks utilizing power and manual hand tools including saws, hammers, drills, sanders, and stationary power tools.
  • Assist with a variety of construction trades including masonry, carpentry, and electrical.
