About The Position

The Maintenance Assistant will provide maintenance service to the campus community. For all duties of the position, incumbent must maintain the work area in a clean and safe manner. Knowledge of and the ability to use required hand and power tools. All assigned tasks will be accomplished in a timely and appropriate manner.

Requirements

• Per Civil Service Standards and Specifications.
• Two years full-time experience in maintenance or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled tradesman or completion of a two-year technical school course at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services, such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership (NYS CSEA-P) Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of appropriate technical courses at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.
• Successful completion of the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. It does not include 4,000 hours of on-the-job training, as required for the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship.
• The candidate must have the ability to perform moderate to heavy manual labor and must be able to perform the physical tasks of the position such as bending, lifting/moving up to 50 lbs, stretching, and climbing.
• Must have the ability to work in confined spaces and from a ladder, scaffolding or man lift over ten feet in height.
• The candidate must have the ability to understand and carry out written and oral instruction.
• Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver’s License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations.
• Out-of-State Applicants: Please note as a condition of employment and in order for this position to be tendered, the successful incumbent will be required to provide evidence of a valid license and driving abstract from the state issuing the license within five business days of a conditional offer and must obtain a NYS driver's license within 30 days of official start date.

Responsibilities

• Operate hand and power tools.
• Assist in the repair and construction of walls and drop ceilings. Completed work is the quality normally expected.
• Assist others in the painting or carpentry trade.
• Assist in the repair and installation of floor tile, cove base doors.
• Follow departmental guidelines, policies regarding job duties, work rules, safety completion of work and wears the proper safety equipment. Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions. Follow all safety rules and regulations.
• Other duties as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
