About The Position

The Maintenance Assistant position at Wyndham Garden Downtown Norfolk, VA, involves maintaining positive guest relations and ensuring guest satisfaction by resolving complaints. The role requires comprehensive knowledge of hotel features, services, and daily operations. Key responsibilities include executing daily maintenance assignments from the Chief Engineer/Supervisor, addressing work orders and night reports, conducting rounds to identify problems and safety concerns, and coordinating preventive maintenance schedules with the Executive Housekeeper and Front Office. The assistant will support electricians, carpenters, plumbers, and painters in various repair tasks, ensuring proper tool usage and chemical handling in compliance with OSHA regulations and hotel standards. The position demands familiarity with health, electrical, fire, and mechanical codes, as well as proficiency with power and hand tools, meters, blueprints, and wiring schematics. Additionally, the Maintenance Assistant is crucial in emergency response to protect guests and associates and preserve hotel systems, acting swiftly to restore normal operations. Adherence to all departmental, Commonwealth Lodging Management, hotel policies, and brand standards is mandatory.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED): or Work Equivalent
  • Computer skills required.
  • Good understanding of the English language, good communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Working knowledge of health codes.
  • Working knowledge of electrical codes.
  • Working knowledge of national/local fire codes.
  • Working knowledge of local mechanical codes.
  • Working knowledge of blueprints and wiring schematics.
  • Working knowledge of power and hand tools, meters, etc. as it relates to the technical trades.
  • Knowledge of methods and materials used in general building maintenance, carpentry, plumbing, building and electrical units and HVAC.
  • Knowledge of the use and repair of common tools and equipment used in general maintenance.
  • Knowledge of maintenance and repair of facilities.
  • Knowledge of systems design and troubleshooting.
  • Minimum 2 year(s) experience as a commercial electrician or in other trade (plumbing, HVAC etc.).

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office preferred.
  • Experience with hotel systems is preferred.
  • Minimum of 1 to 2 years of experience as a Maintenance Assistant is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Be in proper uniform, with a nametag.
  • Always maintain positive guest relations.
  • Work to resolve guest complaints, ensuring guest satisfaction.
  • Maintain knowledge of all hotel features/services, hours of operation, room rates, special packages and promotions, daily house count and expected arrivals/departures and scheduled daily group activities.
  • Maintain complete knowledge of correct maintenance and use of equipment.
  • Use equipment only as intended.
  • Monitor and maintain cleanliness, sanitation and organization of assigned work areas.
  • Receive daily work assignments from Chief Engineer/Supervisor and review priorities and special projects.
  • Check work orders and night report for any problems.
  • Make rounds checking these problem areas and note any information needed or safety concerns in the hotel.
  • Schedule work in accordance with preventive maintenance program in rooms, coordinating with the Executive Housekeeper and Front Office.
  • Assist electrician, carpenter, plumber and painter in all phases of repair work.
  • Maintain the proper use, cleaning, maintenance and storage of all tools.
  • Handle chemicals for designated uses/surfaces.
  • Use all chemicals in accordance with OSHA regulations and hotel requirements.
  • Ensure security of any assigned keys.
  • Assists in handling emergencies to protect our guests and associates and preserve the building and its systems during the emergency.
  • Must act as quickly and responsibly as possible to return the building to its normal operating status.
  • Responsible for knowing and abiding by all department, Commonwealth Lodging Management and hotel policies and procedures, as well as the brand standards, policies and procedures.
