At Regions, the Mainframe Systems Engineer Manager manages installation of vendor software by internal and external Systems Engineers for supported technical processes and systems. This position is for a z/OS system programmer manager who is responsible for overseeing a team of z/OS system programmers who are tasked with maintaining and supporting the stability, performance, and security of IBM mainframe operating systems. This leadership role involves managing system upgrades, automation, and ensuring that the mainframe environment meets service level agreements. The manager also handles resource planning, team development, and collaborates with other IT departments and vendors.

  • Ensures installation project plans are created and completed within project timelines
  • Provides leadership and mentoring for direct reports and indirect reports in development opportunities, goal-setting/achievement, and employee engagement targets
  • Provides monthly system utilization and performance reports to information technology management
  • Ensures that a proper systems programming team is in place before any major system change is put in
  • Follows appropriate procedures invoking change management to make proper changes to resolve problems
  • Uses appropriate technology based best practices for resolving problems
  • Utilizes knowledge of the relevant software vendors (i.e., IBM, Compuware, CA) procedures and disciplines for software updates, patches, and temporary fixes
  • Team leadership: Manage a team of system programmers, overseeing their technical workload, development, and performance.
  • Strategic planning: Guide the long-term strategy for the z/OS environment, including planning for system upgrades, hardware configurations, and communications.
  • Technical oversight: Ensure the team handles critical tasks such as installation, customization, and maintenance of the z/OS operating system and related software.
  • Automation: Oversee the team's efforts in automation processes to manage the MVS infrastructure.
  • Vendor and stakeholder management: Act as a liaison with software and hardware vendors for support and issue resolution, and work with other IT departments to meet business needs.
  • Problem-solving: Guide the team in resolving complex technical issues and implementing solutions for system problems.
  • Bachelors degree
  • Eight (8) years of experience
  • Completion of related technical mainframe management training in the areas of project management, CICS and DB2, z/OS, and storage performance and capacity management
  • Ability to manage multiple projects
