About The Position

UConn’s Facilities Operations Department has two job openings for a Mail Handler or Mail Handler Trainee positions. These are permanent, full-time positions, Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., 37.5 hours per week with an unpaid half an hour for lunch. These positions report to the Mail Services Supervisor. These positions are categorized as “Open to the Public", however, current, qualified UConn NP-2 employees will be given preference in the hiring process. The salary for a current UConn NP-2 employee will be determined at the time of job offer based on the employee’s current job classification and step and is non-negotiable. If both positions are not filled by qualified, UConn NP-2 employees, applications submitted by external applicants would then be considered and evaluated. The hourly rate of pay is $22.26/hour for the Mail Handler job classification and the hourly rate of pay is $21.06/hour for the Mail Handler Trainee job classification; these pay rates are non-negotiable for those new to State Employment. Must be willing to work during emergency closures/delayed openings due to inclement weather or for significant events that affect campus operations. Requirements

  • Skills oral and written communication skills; interpersonal skills
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions; perform basic arithmetic computations; utilize computer software
  • Mechanical ability
  • Knowledge of U.S. Postal Service regulations, rates, and classes of mail (Mail Handler ONLY)
  • Ability to operate computerized and mechanical postal processing equipment (Mail Handler ONLY)
  • One (1) year of experience in a mail service or postal operation involving the operation and maintenance of mail service equipment (Mail Handler ONLY)
  • Any experience and training which would provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above (Mail Handler Trainee)
  • Applicants must have a current motor vehicle operator license

Responsibilities

  • Sorts, distributes, and routes incoming and interoffice mail
  • Operates automatic postage application equipment, mail inserters, and weight scales
  • Weighs and stamps postaged, franked, or metered mail
  • Drives state vehicles in the delivery of United States and interagency mail
  • Picks up and delivers mail at United States Post Offices
  • Signs for insured, certified, registered, and special delivery mail
  • Updates and maintains records
  • Schedules vehicle maintenance
  • Provides postal service assistance to customers
  • May maintain daily cash records
  • Performs related duties as required
  • Receives training to perform tasks as outlined in the specification for the class of Mail Handler
  • Weighs and operates automatic postage application equipment, scales, mail inserters, and related mail equipment
  • Loads and unloads mail vehicles, tray sacks, or carts of mail
  • May be required to open and inspect mail
  • May sign for mail
  • May drive state vehicles
