About The Position

When you join the growing BILH team, you're not just taking a job, you’re making a difference in people’s lives. We are seeking a dedicated Physician Assistant to join the MAH Surgery Services Team. Working under the supervision of physician in the Department of Surgery to provide inpatient care. This position will be part of a team of PA’s that support the sub-specialty surgical services care for non-critical care patients during all phases of hospitalization.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree.
  • Must also be a graduate of a Physician Assistant Program approved by the American Medical Association.
  • Must be licensed as a Physician Assistant in Massachusetts.
  • A certificate issued by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA), may be required for certain departments.
  • If prescribing medications is included in clinical duties and privileges, Massachusetts Controlled Substances Registration and federal DEA Controlled Substance Registration are required.
  • 1-2 years prior experience in a similar health care or inpatient hospital setting preferred.
  • Expert clinical judgment to function in an independent role.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to be self-directive and demonstrate initiative.
  • Ability to comprehend and communicate complex verbal and written information in English.
  • Ability to utilize appropriate problem solving and conflict resolution skills.

Responsibilities

  • Responds to emergency situations, adhering to standards of practice and established procedures.
  • Obtains complete medical history of patients.
  • Perform physical examinations; orders diagnostic tests, interprets test results and imaging studies.
  • Places consult orders.
  • Formulates diagnosis and treatment plans.
  • Prescribes and/or dispenses medications.
  • Counsels patients and families as needed.
  • Completes discharge documentation.
  • Follows hospital and department policies with special attention to safety, dress, attendance and punctuality, and display of ID badge.
  • Handles all work-related information in a confidential manner, as outlined in Confidentiality Policy.
  • Demonstrates initiative and creativity to continuously improve services, departmental and interdepartmental processes.
  • Plans, organizes, and renders care for patients within an assigned area.
  • Performs work responsibilities while staying in compliance with all applicable laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Adheres to Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control plan including consistent use of safety devices.
  • When taking a telephone order, writes the order on the Doctor’s Orders, reads the order back to the MD and document as a TORB.
  • When taking a verbal order, repeats the order back to the MD prior to implementing the order and documents as a VORB.
  • Uses only accepted abbreviations when documenting in the medical record.
  • Uses two unique patient identifiers prior to treatment or patient transport.
  • Adheres to Safe Injection Practices.
  • Complies with Isolation Precautions including standard precautions.
  • Consistently complies with the hospital's Hand Hygiene Policy.
  • Participates in EHS's TB program.
  • Participates in hospital's annual seasonal vaccine program.
